Kansas State University Head Football Coach Stan Parrish said the Wildcats decided to form a 12th Man kickoff team because of the success A&M has had with its 12th Man team over the last three years, and because they wanted to generate student interest in the football team. "It’s created an incredible amount of interest in the pro gram,” Parrish said. He said he was surprised at the amount of student interest in the 12th Man man team at Kansas State and at the large turnout at the first 12th Man tryout. Kansas State has an enrollment of about 16,000, and Parrish said 175 students showed up for the first 12th Man tryout. Eight of those 175 made the team, he said, and this week was their first week of practice with the rest of the team. Parrish said the other three members of the Kansas State 12th Man team will be atheletes from the regular football team. The Kansas State 12th Man team will make its debut kickoff at their homecoming game Oct. 25 against the University of Mis souri, Parrish said. Our receiving corps is as good as anything they’ll go up against.” The other starters in that Aggie receiving corps are flanker Rod Har ris and tight end Rod Bernstine, the SWC’s leading receiver this season with 28 catches. Harris, who also is the Aggies’ punt return specialist, agreed with Walker’s assessment. “Both teams are good,” Harris said. “Whoever has the least mistakes will win the game. “We’ll have to run good routes and play with intensity and emo tion.” Bernstine said getting ready emo tionally won’t be a problem for A&M. “If you can’t get excited for (Bay lor and a television audience), then you can’t get excited for anything,” he said. 9-Piece Shrimp Dinner Special $4.99 Limited Time It’s heaven for shrimp lovers. Texas Ave., Bryan The only thing exciting about A&M last week was the defense, which held Houston to one first down and one yard of total offense in the first half. A&M Head Coach Jackie Sherrill said the defense again will need to play with that intensity and put pressure on Carlson. “We can’t allow Cody to sit back there and do what he does,” Sherrill said. “He’s awfully intelligent. We’ll have to let him pick himself off the ground a couple of times.” The A&M offense, led by junior quarterback Kevin Murray, was un able to put the ball into the end zone despite penetrating the Houston 20- yard line six times. “You can attribute that to a lot of things,” Walker said. “Houston played good defense. . . . But we need to gel a little better as a unit. “It’s not that we’re not moving the ball, we just need to score.” Murray, despite becoming A&M’s all-time pass completion leader by reaching 408 Saturday, has yet to look like his All-SWC self of last year. He was upset with his play in last year’s loss to Baylor when he threw three interceptions. But Murray has proven he can lead the Aggies and since he’s over due to have a spectacular game, look for him to play all-out against the Bears. Of course he won’t have to do it alone. The backfield of fullback Roger Vick and Keith Woodside has turned in a solid performance and the once-questionable offensive line is getting better. Saturday, Oct. 18, 6 p.m.: “Calling all cars. Altercation over. Send in squad to remove Bearskin rug from field.” Aggie Notes . . . Sherrill said he hopes to see Aggie fans bring their 12th Man towels out in force Satur day to make their presence known. The 74,000-76,()()() expected specta tors will be the largest crowd Baylor has played in front of since last year’s Texas-Baylor game. to invitational The Texas A&M cross country team travels to San Antonio today to compete in the University of Texas at San Antonio Invitatio nal.
