Restaurant Report
By Mike Sullivan
Staff Writer
The restaurants listed below
were inspected Oct. 1 through
Tuesday by the Brazos County
Health Department. The infor
mation is based on food service
establishment reports.
SCORED 95 OR ABOVE:
• Vortex at Post Oak Mall was
inspected by Mike Lester. Score
— 98. One point was subtracted
from the report because some
flash plates were missing and
some jumbled ceiling tiles needed
to be reset. One more point was
deducted on the report because
there was a leak in the plumbing
under a handsink in the men’s
bathroom.
• Eastgate Live at 109 Walton
Dr. in College Station was in
spected by Mike Lester. Score —
96. Four points were deducted on
the report because a rear door
was not self-closing.
• The Roxz at 313 S. College
Rd. in College Station was in
spected by David Pickens. Score
— 96. Two points were deducted
on the report because some mix
ers weren’t covered. Two one-
point violations were cited in the
report because a water valve
needed repairing and some ice-
scoop hooks needed to be in
stalled.
SCORED BETWEEN 80 AND
85:
• Ramada Inn at 410 S. Texas
Ave. in College Station was in
spected by David Pickens. Score
— 85. Four points were sub
tracted on the report because a
kitchen hand sink was inaccessi
ble. Two two-point subtractions
were made in the report because
there was a grease buildup under
a griddle and there was some
food on the floor. Another two
points were deducted on the re
port because some pallets in a
walk-in cooler needed to be
raised six inches off the floor.
Five one-point violations were
made in the report for the follow
ing: a floor under a busing station
needed to be cleaned; some ice
machines that were not in use
needed to be removed; some rot
ting wooden shelves needed to be
replaced; an area under a prepa
ration counter needed to be
cleaned; some leaking plumbing
needed to be fixed.
Double Dave’s Pizza at 2314 S.
Texas Ave. in College Station was
inspected by David Pickens. Score
— 80. Five points were subtracted
from the report because some
poisons and cleaning products
were stored incorrectly. A four-
point violation was cited in the re
port because a rear door was not
self-closing. Two two-point viola
tions were subtractecl from the
report because a bathroom door
was not self-closing and a garbage
can was too full.
A total of five points was de
ducted on the report because
there was some food splatter and
dust on the kitchen floors,
shelves, equipment and walls.
Two one-point deductions were
subtracted from the report be
cause some ice scoops and some
single-service items were being
stored incorrectly.
David Jefferson, a registered sanitarian at the department, says res
taurants with scores of 95 or above generally have excellent operations
and facilities. Jefferson says restaurants with scores in the 70s or low 80s
usually have serious violations on the health report.
Scores can be misleading, Jefferson says, because restaurants can
achieve the same score by having several major violations or an abun
dance of minor violations. He says the major violations might close the
restaurant down while some minor violations can be corrected during
the inspection.
Jefferson says the department might close a restaurant if: the score
is below 60, the personnel has infectious diseases, the restaurant lacks
adequate refrigeration, a sewage backup exists in the building, the res
taurant has a complete lack of sanitization for the food equipment.
Point deductions, or violations, on the report range from one point
(minor violation) to five points (major violation). The department in
spects each restaurant about every six months.
Sometimes a follow-up inspection must be made, usually within 10
days. Jefferson says a restaurant might require a follow-up inspection if
it has a four- or five-point violation that cannot be corrected while the
inspector is still there, or there are numerous small violations.
Inspectors at the department are registered sanitarians.

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas residents

Planes loaded with movie stars,

of the Princess Grace Foundation,
an organization named for the late

young performing artists.
The staff of the Loews Anatole

for 18 months. The 1,600 hotel
workers have attended workshops to
learn such things as how to pro

The servers, said Anatole man

The hotel also has given special

40 security people who will cater to
the needs of the famous guests.
Expected guests include the royal

Prince Albert and Princesses Stepha
