Correction In Wednesday’s edition of The Battalion, a story on page I re ported that 4.2 percent of Texas A&M's total operating funds would be cut in 1987. The head line of the story incorrectly stated that A&M would lose 4.6 percent of the funding. The Battalion re grets the error. Warped UT/A&M endowment funds top Harvard, rest of nation AUSTIN (AP) — After years of taking a back seat to Harvard, the endowment funds managed by the University of Texas System now are the nation’s largest, officials say. The UT-managed funds, which are also used to support the Texas A&M System, had a market value of about $3.6 billion at the end of Au gust, just ahead of Harvard’s $3.5 billion. Last year, Harvard led with $2.5 billion, and UT had $2.3 billion. A survey published by The Chronicle of 1 ligher Education said UT surpassed Harvard at the end of each school’s 1985 fiscal year, when the market value of the UT funds was $2.9 billion and Harvard’s was $2.7 billion. UT officials have not been brag ging about the change in position. They noted that Harvard’s en dowment supports a campus of less than 15,000 students, while most of the funds managed by UT are shared by a 14-campus system in cluding Texas A&M University at College Station and Prairie View A&M University that serves a total of about 160,000 students. Texas officials also said constitu tional restrictions on investment and use of the Permanent Universin Fund, the largest portion of the en dowment money managed by UT, should be taken into account when comparing the fund with endow ments of more flexible private schools such as Harvard. A large portion of proceeds from the PUT is committed to retiring construction bonds. The fund also is used to enhance academic pro grams. Other lexas schools included Rice University in Nth place with $571 million, Southern Methodist University at 28th with S234 million, Baylor University in 38th with $176 million, Baylor College of Medicine -19th with $153 million and South western University H8ih with $67 million. U.S. deports Iranian; family disappears DALLAS (AP) — An Iranian citi zen whose father worked for the de posed Shah has been deported and his wife has been ordered to sign travel documents for deportation of herself and two children, immigra tion officials said Wednesday. Mohammad Reza Nia Youssefi, who owmed an ice-cream business in Arlington, was sent back to Iran on Friday, said Ron Chandler, regional director of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service in Dallas. He said immigration officials did not know the whereabouts of Fahi- meh Assad Amraji and her two chil dren. “We think that they’re still in town here,” Chandler said Wednesday. “We were hopeful of bringing this to an equitable conclusion without hav ing to go that route (arrest).” Chandler said immigration offi cials are trying to contact the family’s attorney. He said an arrest had not yet been ordered, but eventually will be if the wife does not sign the docu ments for her American-born daughter. Youssefi’s lawyers filed an injunc tion to delay deportation, but a fed eral judge in Dallas denied the stay Friday.
