The raising of the legal drinking
age may have decreased the number
of students in local clubs, but it
hasn’t affected the number of men
going through fraternity rush.
"I’ve never seen so many guys
going through rush,” John Whi
taker, a member of Sigma Alpha Ep
silon, says.
This year fraternities have volun
tarily decided to cpiit serving alcohol
at their rush parties because the le
gal drinking age has changed to 21.
Spencer McClung, a member of
the Kappa Alpha fraternity, says fra
ternities are spending money on
other things, such as prizes for a ca
sino night.
Blake Harrison, Interfraternity
Council rush chairman, estimated
that about 500 men are participating
in rush this year. Fraternity rush be
gan Aug. 30 and ends Sept. 15.
Harrison says the lack of alcohol
at rush parties has forced fraterni
ties to be more creative when they
entertain rushees. Now they have to
work harder to get rushees genui
nely interested in their groups, he
says.
Whitaker says, “We are getting
guys that are a lot more interested in
the fraternities themselves instead of
Harrison agreed the change has
improved rush.
“The guys are using their brains
more to come up with good ideas for
parties,” he says.
Harrison, a member of Kappa Al
pha, says his fraternity organized a
trip to Louisiana Downs.
Other *s various fraterni
ties have planned include a trip to

Sororities unaffec

Sorority rush, which ran from
Aug. 26 to Aug. 31, was not af

The Panhellenic Council is the

Rust says the major change in
