"I’ve never seen so many guys going through rush,” John Whi taker, a member of Sigma Alpha Ep silon, says. This year fraternities have volun tarily decided to cpiit serving alcohol at their rush parties because the le gal drinking age has changed to 21. Spencer McClung, a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity, says fra ternities are spending money on other things, such as prizes for a ca sino night. Blake Harrison, Interfraternity Council rush chairman, estimated that about 500 men are participating in rush this year. Fraternity rush be gan Aug. 30 and ends Sept. 15. Harrison says the lack of alcohol at rush parties has forced fraterni ties to be more creative when they entertain rushees. Now they have to work harder to get rushees genui nely interested in their groups, he says. Whitaker says, “We are getting guys that are a lot more interested in the fraternities themselves instead of Harrison agreed the change has improved rush. “The guys are using their brains more to come up with good ideas for parties,” he says. Harrison, a member of Kappa Al pha, says his fraternity organized a trip to Louisiana Downs.
