Isaiah 40:31 The Battalion SPREADING THE NEWS Classified 845-2611 Cowboys’ Walls calls for contract change; walks out DALLAS (AP) — Veteran cor- nerback Everson Walls walked out of Dallas Cowboys camp Thursday and said he will boycott Monday night’s nationally televised season opener against the New York Giants unless his contract demands are met. Walls was at practice Thursday, but said it would be his last until the Cowboys offer him a suitable con tract. Walls’ agent, Steve Weinberg, told Dallas television station WFAA-TV Thursday night that on Walls’ in struction he had filed a grievance against the Cowboys earlier in the day with the National Football League Players Association. The grievance seeks an arbitra tion hearing and an order forcing the Cowboys to renegotiate in good faith with Weinberg on the last two years of Walls’ five-year contract, which still has two years to run. In 1983, the Cowboys signed four B.C. Open action Mize stakes lead with four birdies ENDICOTT, N.Y. (AP) — Con secutive birdies over his last four holes gave Larry Mize a 7-under-par 64 and a one-stroke lead over Rick Fehr after Thursday’s opening round of the $400,000 B.C. Open golf tournament. Fehr, who birdied his final three holes, had a one-stroke advantage over Bill Glasson, Bobby Wadkins, Mike Smith and Brett Upper. Mark Hayes, Brian Claar, Bobby Cole and Harry Taylor finished at 67, while Chip Beck, Gene Sauers, Dick Mast, Kevin Schiller and David Peoples were at 68. Mize, who started on the 10th tee on the 6,966-yard En-Joie Golf Club course, managed five birdies in his back nine. “I’m really pleased with myself,” Mize, 27, of Columbus, Ga., said “I played real solid. It’s one of my bet ter rounds. I didn’t miss but one green and I hit most of the fairways. Mize has had two second-place finishes this year on the PGA Tour, at the Tournament Players Championship and the Kemper Open. Despite getting off to a slow start, Mize made the turn two strokes un der par. He said the blustery, over cast conditions “made it a little tougher than normal.” “I like this golf course,” Mize said of the tight, water-filled course. “You have to hit it fairly straight. I think it suits my game.” He birdied the par-5 third hole, parred the next two, then strung to gether his four birdies, including a 20-foot putt on the final hole. “Usually, three is my limit,” Mize joked of his round that featured seven birdies. Fehr had the same number of bir dies but a bogey on the par-5 fifth hole cost him a share of the first-day lead. “I’m thrilled with the score, but not with the way I got it,” the 24- year-old Seattle product said. “It was one of those days. I got the ball near the hole, not always with a real solid shot though.” Fehr, whose round was his lowest round of the nearly completed sea son, also opened in unspectacular fashion, making pars on six of the first seven holes on the back nine, where he started. CLASS OF ’45, ’79, ’80, ’81 veteran players to three-year con tracts, but refused to give Walls a three-year contract, Weinberg said. Walls agreed on a three-year con tract as a result, Weinberg said, after a special clause was included that promised renegotiation of the 1986 and 1987 years of the contract if Walls achieved 200 points on a point system set up by Brandt. Walls’ performance over the past three years, including appearances in the Pro Bowl, met the specified points, but the Cowboys have failed to renegotiate in good faith as pledged, Weinberg said. The offer extended to Walls for 1986 and 1987 would make him the 12th-highest paid player on the Cowboys, Weinberg said, and the 25th-highest player among NFL de fensive backs. The team was willing to offer more money if Walls agreed on a new four-year contract, Weinberg said. WELCOME BACK AGGIES -SCHULMAN THEATRES DISCOUNT SPECIALS!
