Mark [White announced Monday he has Accepted an invitation from the League of Women Voters to partici pate in a gubernatorial debate, and challenger Bill Clements said that’s dial he has been waiting to hear. “I look forward to having the op portunity to discuss the issues of concern to the people of Texas,” White said in a statement. “Texas faces enormous challenges today, land I believe the voters deserve to be |exposed to the candidates’ ideas.” Clements said for the past two Imonths he has repeatedly stated his Interest in a debate. He was delighted that White “fi lially has decided to accept my oi lier,” he said. “Hopefully, Mark White will not flip-flop on his decision to debate the way he did during the Demo cratic primary, when he said he would debate and then decided to dodge,” Clements said. “Mark White can run but he can not hide. He must answer for the 10.5 percent unemployment. He must answer for the declining eco nomic conditions that have 846,000 Texans unemployed. He must an swer for his litany of broken prom ises,” the former Republican gover nor said. White said, “Perhaps Bill Clem ents, if he accepts this challenge, will take this opportunity to finally di vulge the details of his secret budget plan.” Outside of the fact that the debate will be held prior to the general elec tion in November, no details have been worked out, according to the campaign offices of White and Clements. In a separate release, Clements said that “Mark White, indeed, will give the state of Texas an income tax, if he is re-elected. It is as certain as the sun rising in the East.” While campaign spokesman Mark McKinnon said the governor “has consistently and loudly stated that he adamantly opposes a corporate or personal income tax. He has said he would veto such a tax." Unlawful sales of weapons anger family of crime victim DALLAS (AP) — Ever since John Wilson learned how his brother’s killer got the weapon he used to pepper a karate studio with bullets, his outraged family has waged a war against im proper gun sales. The latest round in that battle has moved to court, where the Wilsons have sued Oshman’s Sporting Goods Inc. and a gun distributor, accusing them of “gross negligence” contributing tojimmy Wilson’s death. Barry Wayne Shaw, 21, was convicted in the karate-studio shooting on Sept. 24, 1984, and also for firing shots in the foyer of his former high school three days later. During Shaw’s trial, the Wil sons learned that two days before the studio shooting, he had bought a 9mm Uzi and 100 rounds of ammunition from an Oshman’s store in Hurst while on two years probation for felony theft. Jury selection begins in Texas Instruments trade secret theft trial Taco Bell’s Star Attractions at Out of this World Low Prices DALLAS (AP) — Jury selection began Monday in the trial of two en gineers accused of stealing computer programs valued at $20 million when they left Texas Instruments to work for another firm. Assistant District Attorney Ted Steinke said he expects the trial of Thomas B. Schalk and Robert G. Leonard to last about two weeks. A Dallas County grand jury in dicted the engineers in September 1985 on charges of theft of trade se crets, a third-degree felony that car ries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Defense attorney Mike Carnes said neither of his clients are accused of actually stealing anything. “They are accused of copying trade secrets,” said Carnes, adding that one of the issues to be decided in the trial is “whether what was co pied was a trade secret.” Schalk and Leonard, who both have doctoral degrees, were TT em ployees working on the development of programs that permitted voice control of computers, officials said. The men resigned from TT to work for Voice Control Systems Inc., a company that designs voice-con- trolled telephones and computers. TT filed a civil lawsuit in 1985 al leging the two former employees had stolen its secrets. The lawsuit was settled out of court under terms that were not disclosed. But IT’s allegations prompted Dallas County District Attorney Henry Wade to order an investiga tion by his of fice’s Specialized Crime Division. The investigation included a search of Voice Control Systems’ Dallas of fices. No trade secrets were recovered from the company during the search, aid Peter Foster, chief exec utive officer of Voice Control Sys tems. “No one has accused VCS of es pionage,” said Foster, who added he was surprised by the indictments be cause he thought the disagreement had been resolved in the civil set tlement. TI officials declined comment on the case.
