GOP house members who are in at least their third two-year term were invited to the session. The Amencan-Statesman said the session will be held in conjunction with this weekend's GOP state convention. The only person other than the IH lawmakers who would attend, an in vitation letter said, would he Repub lican Party Chairman George St rake of Houston. Quoting the letter, the newspaper said the meeting's purpose is to dis cuss “whether the group wants a contingent Republican speaker can didate to secure contingent pledges of support which would activate only should a speaker's race develop.” House Speaker Gib Lewis, D-Fort Worth, is opposed bv Republican de veloper K. Treasury Secretary Gustavo Petri- cioli, at a breakfast with foreign cor respondents, said the plan would he presented to President Miguel de la Madrid and the economic Cabinet for approval. He declined to reveal details of the plan but said it would reflect the Police say cut in tickets is in protest fresh economic problems the nation has suffered because of the collapse of world oil prices. “We will present what is the actual position of the Mexican economy, the real situation that confronts us,” he said. “It is practically impossible for the economy to be able to totally absorb the external impact, the shock in the balance of payments," he said. Mexico, the world’s fourth largest C ducer of crude, is expected to at least $6 billion in foreign rev enues from oil sales this year because of the drop in oil prices. As a result, tne government is strapped for cash to continue meet ing payments on its foreign debt of $97.6 billion. PetrKKili said the nation owes about $1.5 billion in interest and principal payments by month’s end, out he dec lined to say how much the nation still has in international re serves to pay the tab. Other analysts have said those reserves are running around $5 billion. m MY UTTLE PONY G ‘SHORT CIRCUIT PG ‘BACK TO SCHOOL tmras PG-13 ***«• SCHULMAN 6 DALLAS (AP) — Some Dallas X7 IVupIr aaMcavr Cl (jaie»-s7M sow*' IRSiT'I PANNING FOR GOLD? About 125 members of the, Dallas Police Association voted T uesday to declare the reduction in citations a deliberate action. The vote came af ter a three-hour, closed-door special general meeting at the organiza tion’s downtown offices. According to figures released by police Tuesday, 28 percent fewer traffic citations were written the month after the City Council cut most municipal employees' pay by 1 pescent. Using that estimate, the city stands to lose more than $3 million if the decline holds steady for the rest of the year. The citv had projected it would save $1.2 million as a result of the pay cut. Tuesday's action was taken against the advice of association president J.K. Ramsey, who had said before the meeting that any reduc tion was due to stepped-up crime- fighting efforts Ramsey said Wednesday not all the association members were pre sent at the meeting. “There is a different line of think ing. Some of the officers do not like that (the slowdown),” he said Municipal court records reflect a citation decline of almost 45 percent. The court measures the number of citations according to their height in a stack, while police cull their figures from officers' activity reports What’s up Thursday ON-CAMPUS HOUSING INFORMATION* students cur ready living on campus are required to indicate their Sum mer II housing; intention today and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Rewdems of Hobby, Neeiv, Mclnnts and Schu macher must sign up in the < l Lounge.
