‘Human’ prints
may belong
to dinosaur
DAIT.AS (AP) — Sets of an
cient foettprmts creationists have
claimed as evidence that humans
and dmcMaurs co-existed mav ac
tually be tracks of flatfooted crea
tures. according to new research.
T he finding bv Clen Kuban, a
computer programmer and part-
time dinosaur detective from
Brunswick. Ohio, has prompted
some creationists to back a wav
from claims the prints are evi
dence that (kid created mankind
because man existed at the same
time as the dinosaurs and did not
esc live.
The prints in the Paluxy River,
southwest of Dallas, were exca
vated beginning‘in 1968. T hey
are 15 to 20 inches long and do
not appear to have clear toe
marks like most of the dinosaur
tracks nearby.
But because of the new find
ings jhat the prints may be those
of dinosaurs with an unusual
heel-to-toe gait, distribution of a
creationist movie on the subject
has lieen stopped and the author
of a popular nook* on the prints
now sends out disc laimers
(•eulogist and author John
Morris said. “Until we get it
itoned out. we may have made a
mistake “
Morris used the prints for
much of the evidence in his book,
as did the Films for Christ Asso
ciation for the creationist film,
“Footprints in Stone.”
Kuban sent his evidence to cre
ationists Last fall, distribution of
“Footprints in Stone'’ was
stopped.

Lawsuit against TECAT
reaches high court
AUSTIN (AP)— A plea on behalf
of S50 Starr County educators
against the recent reading and writ
ing test reached the Texas Supreme
(aHirt Wednesday.
The court was advised, however,
that the lawsuit did not include all
the issues raised bv educators against
the Texas Examination for Current
Administrators ami Teachers, or
TECAT.
The Texas State T eac hers Asso
ciation had asked the court to delay
the Starr Counts suit and consol
idate it with the tSTA suit in which
the 3rd Court of Appeals at Austin
ruled Friday that the literacy exam
administered to all Texas educators
was a legal exercise of the state's “po
lice power.”
I he Supreme (kiurt denied that
motion.
“Ours is the only case which in
cludes aU the issues — both statutory
and constitutional — and ours is the
only case which represents all ad
ministrators and teachers m Texas.”
TSTA President Chailes Beard said
in a statement.
Representatives of TSTA were in
die courtroom for oral arguments
on the Starr (aiunty case filed by
Picrject Principle Inc., a nonprofit
teac hers’ organization.
The organization obtained a tem-
iMirarv restraining order from State
District Judge Ricardo (kircia that
said the state could not take away the
educators’ teaching certificates if
they failed the exam
Assistant Attorney (>eneral Kevin
O'Hanlon said teachers are not be
ing “singled out” by the tests, since
certified public accountants, lawyers,
medical .students and engineers all
must pass multipie-part tests to be
certified
The intentions of the test are “to
make teac hmg truly a profession in
this state.” he said. “What we’re try
ing to do is create a profession, if
you w ill ,"
However, Chief Justice Hill added
that (km haps a test on subject matter
would lie a “better gauge" of a teach
er’s competency.
