Mo (AP) — If a team in next year’s NCAA basketball tournament has one player who tests positive for drugs, it mav be kicked out of the competition even if the tournament has already begun. NCAA President Jack Davis said Tuesdav “This is a very significant thing,** Davis said in an interview following a news conference “We think the insti tution and the team should bear some responsibility if one of its players is found to be using drugs.** Davu said this new wnfikle in the drug-testing program approved in last January's NCAA convention was adopted by the NCAA Executive Committee at it* meetings in Kansas City this week. He emphasized that details are yet to hr worked out but that the Executive Committee hopes to pul the policy into effect for all men’s and women's teams champion ships NCAA schools approved a lengthy drug-testing proposal at their con vention in New Orleans, including list ol performance-enhancing subst ances to be banned as well as street drugs such as cocaine and marijuana. Da\ is said considerable work remains in deciding how the tests will be admi nistered and when. The NCAA sponsors 74 cham pionships in men's and women's sports, but tests will not be conducted in every championship every year. The earliest time the testing could he done would be at the cross-country competition next November. Tests will be made at all football bowl a games.
