Nicaraguan President Daniel Or tega said on April 13 the Nicara guans would sign an agreement on June 6 if the administration agreed to terminate Contra aid. It was not known whether he was responding to the Habib letter, but Slattery said it nevertheless provided Pennzoil another key element for a compro mise. Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, like Slat tery an opponent of Contra aid, called the letter “extraordinary” and “a very profound basis for reconcil iation.” He said he is not certain that other officials in the administration support Habib's views, however. Informed aides to several law makers, including a key Senate Re publican who supported Contra aid in the Senate, speculated that ad ministration officials are coma the view of many lawmakers, the 5-year-old Contra effort work and that Habib couldpli tal role in convincing Reaganofi Moreover, despite repeaiti tempts, Reagan still has beenu to get Congress to approve stricted military aid. And polls i hr American people still of L’.S. aid to the Contrasbvnearl: to-1 margin. (continued from page 1) in the same quarter in 1985, officials said. Pennzoil officials attributed the drop mostly to the slump in oil prices. Richard J. Howe, Pennzoil presi dent, predicted that average oil and gas pi ices will be even lower during the second quarter. Earnings per common share were 93 cents for the year’s first quarter, compared to $1.20 for the 1985 first quarter, Howe said. Operating in come was $112.6 million, compared to $139.8 posted for the first quarter in 1985. “However, last year’s first quarter earnings included a gain of 21 cents per share from the sale of securities, so our operating results were rela tively close to last year’s,” Howe said. Howe said Pennzoil officials be lieve world prices on crude oil will approach $20-a-barrel later this year. “We expect natural gas prices, on the other nand, to weaken even fur ther this summer due to various market and governmental forces, coupled with the normal summer time slump in demand,” he said. In discussing the Texaco-Pennzoil case, Liedtke accused Texaco of un leashing a media blitz consisting of “half-truths, innuendos and, in some cases, extremely insulting and abu sive charges.” In November, ajury ruled Texaco wrongfully interfered in a merger agreement between Pennzoil and Getty Oil Co. when it acquired Getty. About one month ago, represen tatives of both companies met in New York to discuss the possi of settling the case, but Liediit Texaco offered nothing sute during the meeting. “In our opinion, Texaco added no real meat to the G* cass," said Liedtke, who adds proposal would be reviewedh nzoil's board Thursday. “It # the same picked-over old bone On Wednesday, Texaco briefs in a Houston stale apj court asking that theawardjn to Pennzoil be overturned Liedtke said he hadnotseo brief s but understood fromte vers that they contained not new. He also said he knows further contact made between two companies since the New meeting and no plans forfi meetings. Tenure STUDENT TYPING — 20 vcais experience.
