to 8-7 victory over Astros
i HOUSTON (AP) — In his first season as manager
of the Atlanta Braves, Chuck Tanner is keeping his
promise to his reserves.
‘He told us at the beginning of the season he was
going to play everyone,” veteran Chris Chambliss said
ipunday after the Braves held on to defeat the Houston
Astros 8-7.

Pirates 8, Cubs 0
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Brown drove in four
runs, including a three-run homer, and the Pittsburgh
Pirates blanked the Cubs 8-0 Sunday behind the four-
hit pitching of Rick Reuschel and two relievers.
Sample’s fourth-inning shot, which gave the Braves
a 4-0 lead, was ruled fair by third-base umpire John
AlcSherry, triggering a heated dispute with Houston
Manager Hal Lanier.
“I hit it hard enough to be a home run. I just stood
there and waited to see if it was fair,” said Sample, who
Collected his first three National League hits.
“When we play another group of guys it doesn’t
hurt at all,” Tanner said. “It just gives our regulars a
chance to sit and watch and rest.”
Phillies 4, Mets 2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Darren Daulton cracked
a two-run homer, and Gary Redus hit a solo shot to
back Shane Rawley’s 10-hit pitching as the Philadel
phia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 4-2 Sunday.

The Atlanta bench had help from Ken Oberkfell, a
regular, who drove in four runs, and veteran pitcher
Gene Garber, who pitched out of a ninth-irtning jam
after the Astros jumped on relief ace Bruce Sutter.
Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Simmons singled, stole second, went to third on a fly
[rail and scored on Oberkfell’s single.
: The Braves increased their lead to 5-0 in the fourth
pn Sample’s homer which followed singles by Simmons
and Chambliss. Oberkfell then reached on a fielding
error by Houston shortstop Dickie Thon, was sacri
ficed to second and scored when second baseman Bill
Doran mishandled Omar Moreno’s grounder.
The Astros scored their first run in the fourth when
[Thon singled, Denny Walling walked, Thon took third
pn a fly ball and scored on a passed ball by Simmons.
Oberkfell drove in Atlanta’s last three runs with a
sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and singles in the sev
enth and ninth. The last one proved decisive when

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mitch Webster and Herm Win-
ningham hit solo home runs and Bryn Smith scattered
three hits in six innings, leading the Montreal Expos to
a 3-2 triumph Sunday that halted the previously unde
feated St. Louis Cardinals’ winning streak at four
games.
Padres 7, Reds 6
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Marvell Wynne hit his second
home run of the game Sunday to give the San Diego
Padres a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
Wynne, who homered as a pinch hitter to lead off
the seventh inning, hit a 2-1 pitch from Joe Price over
the right-field wall in the ninth.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Franklin Stubbs hit a tie
breaking two-run homer in the seventh inning Sun
day, his third home run in as many games, and Orel
Hershiser scattered seven hits, leading the Los Angeles
Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the.San Francisco Giants.

Mike Smithson, 1-1, went the dis
tance for the Twins and took the loss
despite tying his career high with
nine strikeouts.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ron Guidry
won his second start of 1986, aided
by a two-run single from Don Mat
tingly, as the New York Yankees
ended their season-opening home-
stand Sunday with a 3-2 victory over
the Milwaukee Brewers.
It gave the Yankees a three-game
sweep over Milwaukee, four consec-
lUtive victories and a 5-1 record,
equalling their best start in 11 sea
sons.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —
Frank White and Hal McRae
jumped on relief pitcher Dennis
Lamp with run-scoring singles in the
fifth inning Sunday that carried the
Kansas City Royals to a 7-4 victory
over the Toronto Blue Jays.

CHICAGO (AP) — Wade Boggs
hit three singles and drove in four
runs as the Boston Red Sox
pounded 16 hits and buried the Chi
cago White Sox 12-2 Sunday.
Jim Rice added three runs batted
in, two on a home run, and Bill
Buckner and Dwight Evans each had
two RBI. Boston starter Tim Lollar
allowed two hits and one run in six
innings.
A’s 11, Angels 7
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Rookie
Jose Canseco drove in five runs with
a single and his second home run as
the A’s beat the California Angels
11-7 Sunday.
Canseco, a 21-year-old outfielder
who hit 36 homers in the minor
leagues last season, hit a three-run
homer in the fifth inning and had a
two-run single in the sixth.
