Johan Kriek won the other first- round match by beating Brad Gil bert 6-4, 6-1, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3. Noah, ranked eighth in the world, broke Anger’s service just four times in the entire match, but the breaks came at crucial times. He broke him at 6-5 of the first set by making a diving, tumbling back hand return of Anger’s attempt at a passing shot. That set up the break point, which Noah made with a drop shot that the lunging Anger could not return. In the final set, Noah got a break at 2-1 on two outstanding passing shots. The first was a twisting over hand that landed in a corner behind the outstretched acquet of the 6- foot-2 Anger. Noah also got a sec ond break at 5-2, the final shot hit ting Anger at the net. Both Noah and Anger, ranked 25th in the world, were making their first appearance in the WCT finals. Noah now meets third-seeded Ste fan Edberg of Sweden in a quarterfi nal match Thursday. Kreik, making his third appear ance in the WCT finals, was trailing Gilbert 2-0 in the fifth set when he changed his style of play and started his winning rally. Kreik, ranked 14th in the world, broke llth-ranked Gilbert twice to take a 4-2 lead. Gilbert broke Kreik to pull within 4-3. But Kreik broke back and held on to win and advance to the quarterfinals against top- seeded Mats Wilander Wednesday night. /I &A5EBALL rAk'ZS _ jCZ'AJtiy AMP /rsv/v'r o\^r> (jKnjL t/-/£ fAT(A^yp/AJoe>. mzxb in) Alf?6APV. The No. 3 Aggies won the first game 5-1 behind Carpenter’s eight strikeouts. Car- ——————— penter and the Softball A&M defense gave up only three hits to the Bob cats. A&M freshman Tory Parks went 3-for-4 at the plate, while All-Amer ica third baseman Cindy Cooper went 2-for-3. Aggie shortstop Liz Mizera had two RBI, including a triple in the seventh inning. In the second game, Andaya, a preseason All-America pick, struck out nine and came one hit short of recording a perfect game in leading the Aggies to a 5-0 victory. Aggie first baseman Mary Schwind, who started at catcher for the first time this season, went 3-for- 3 with three RBI to pace A&M. Schwind came only a home run short of batting the cycle — the se nior singled, doubled and tripled. A&M, which improved its record to 24-7 with the two victories, now travels to Columbia, S.C., for a Fri day game with the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Aggies next home encounter will be April 20 in a dou ble-header with Louisiana Tech.
