Call 845-2611 Ags’ Barnes gets closer to all-time shot record From Staff and Wire Reports AUSTIN — Texas A&M has an other world class shotputting “Randy” on campus. Olympian Randy Matson, who made his mark on the track and field world in the 1970s, is a director of alumni at A&M. But he never heaved the 16- pound shot his freshman year TfCICK as far as Randy and Field Barnes, a 6- foot-5, 285-pound sensation from West Virginia. Barnes made believers at the Texas Relays Saturday with a heave of 69 feet, 2 1 /4 inches, the best ever by a collegiate freshman and 10th on the all-time list. The Aggie freshman had popped some eyes open with a 70-foot heave in practice. His effort of 69 feet, 2 1 /2 inches was the best university-college divi sion shot put in Texas Relays’ history and was the third best in Southwest Conference history. A1 Feuerbach set the meet mark of 70-l!/2 while competing in the open division for the Pacific Coast Track Club in 1974. A&M’s Matson and Michael Car ter of Southern Methodist had throws of 71-5 Vs and 71-4%, respec tively, during their collegiate ca reers. Matson had a toss of 68-8 in the 1976 Texas Relays for the previous college-university division best. But Carter and Matson never threw the shot as far as Barnes dur ing their freshmen seasons. Carter had the national freshman record of 67-7. Barnes of Charleston, W.Va., made his tremendous throw on his first try before the Memorial Sta dium crowd of 11,000. His previous best was 67-7‘A in the College Sta tion Relays last weekend. Barnes’ best in high school with the 12-pound shot was 66-9Va at St. Albans, West Virginia. Barnes uses a difficult spin move that makes him inconsistent. “I figured Randy would hit a long one,” A&M Coach Charlie Thomas said. “He was hitting the center of the ring in practice and that’s a good sign. He had one at 70 in practice.” Barnes was voted the meet’s out standing male performer. “I’m excited,” Barnes said. “I’d heard of the Texas Relays and I was excited about competing here. My next goal is the collegiate record.” John Brenner of UCLA set the _ A&M’s Randy Barnes strains as he puts the shot 69-2V4 inches at the Texas Relays last weekend. Barnes’ throw broke the Relay record. collegiate standard of 71-11 in 1984. The Aggies only other first came Friday in the 4x200 relay. Freshmen Lawrence Felton, Floyd Heard, Archie Roberts and Stanley Kerr ran a 1:21.70 to win the event.
