And it won’t be a bad tradeoff. A&M’s three-time NCAA All- American, Chris O’Neil, will be gun ning for a first- place finish in the 100-yard Swimming butterfly com- Men’s A&M in need of runs petition at the three-day meet in In dianapolis. But the senior from Huntsville, Ala., will not be the only Aggie in the 100-yard butterfly as freshman standout Mike Kozlina, of Pitts burgh, also qualified for the NCAA meet with a 49.06-second perfor mance at the Southwest Conference Men’s Swimming Championships two weeks ago. O’Neil has won the 100-yard but terfly event at the SWC men’s cham pionships the last two years and fin ished second in the event at the NCAAs last year. Kozlina, although the heir appar ent to O’Neil’s spot as top Aggie but- terflyer, probably won’t best O’Neil at the NCAAs. O’Neil’s best time in the 100-yard butterfly is a full Wi seconds faster than Kozlina’s. A&M Coach Mel Nash said the 100-yard butterfly event will proba bly be a two-man race between O’Neil and Stanford’s Pablo Mo rales, who have the nation’s two fast- to balance defense Search for hitting continues against Baylor est times. Morales, a silver medalist at the ’84 Los Angeles Olympics in the 100- meter butterfly, owns the current top time with a swim of 47.48 sec onds. O’Neil’s best time this year is 47.59, which he set at the SWC meet. A&M Assistant Coach Tracy Johnston said both those marks were made without their bodies shaved for speed, while the next fastest time is 48.02 by a shaved swimmer. So Morales and O’Neil, who are seeded first and second in the NCAA cham pionships, should be the swimmers to watch in the event. “But you never can tell,” Johnston said. “It’s the NCAA championships and anybody could rise up and do well. Anything can happen.” Kozlina is seeded 31st in the 32- swimmer field, but Johnston said with scratches and the preliminaries he should move up to a higher seed. Johnston added that O’Neil may have an advantage over Morales in that Morales is swimming more events and may be slightly tired en tering Friday’s 100-yard butterfly competition. But O’Neil and Kozlina won’t be allowed to rest solely for Friday’s 100-yard butterfly event. Today, the two make up half of the Aggies’ No. 21-seeded 400-yard medley relay team, which swims in the preliminaries at noon. Joining O’Neil and Kozlina are sophomore Robert Bullock and freshman Eddie Altman. While O’Neil will handle the but terfly chores, Kozlina will swim the backstroke leg of the medley relay race. He also qualified for the 100- yard backstroke competition with a time of 50.80 seconds — an A&M re cord he set at the SWC meet. Bullock, a sophomore from Cin cinnati, will swim the breaststroke portion of the race, while Altman, a freshman from San Antonio Mar shall High School, will anchor the team, swimming the freestyle leg, Finals for the relay events will be held tonight. By Charean Williams Assistant Sports Editor Since Texas A&M has only given up two earned runs, you would ex pect to see some goose eggs in the team pitching records. But even though Aggie ace Shawn Andaya and freshman Julie Car penter have done just that, they have seven losses between them. So what does H that say about the No. 3 Ag gies, 20-7? “That tells y< Softball Photo by Dean Saito A&M pitcher Julie Carpenter fields a bunt against Minnesota last week. A&M hosts Baylor today at 4:30 p.m. in a double-header. u we haven’t been getting the offense we need,” A&M Coach Boh Brock said. “Our pitch ing and defense has been strong. We have those seven losses just because we didn’t score any runs. “Shawn gels into a tie breaker with Florida State, (last weekend in the Houston Classic), is pitching a perfect game and we lose. We have runners on every inning. We just can’t seem to score them." The past three days may have provided the juice the Aggie bats needed. For the first time in two weeks, A&M isn’t on the road. The Ags took Monday off and have worked on hitting Tuesday and Wednesday. “We needed some time off (from playing),” Brock said. “We’ve been working on hitting techniques that will hopefully get us straightened out.” A&M will find out if it’s on the right track today at 4:30 p.m. who it hosts Baylor in a double-headerat the A&M Field. A&M stomped the Bears 7-0 in the Baylor Invitational a month ago, In that game, Carpenter tossed the first no-hitter of her career. “Julie and Shawn have been pitch ing well enough not to lose,” Brock said. “I think you could say we have one of the best duos in the country.’ 1 Andaya, 1 1-4, will pitch the first game and Carpenter, 9-3, willtryto duplicate her first performance against Baylor in the nightcap. “They’re a scrappy team,” Car penter said. “We have to play at our level. I can’t go in thinking it will be easy just because I pitched a no-hit ter the first time. This will be an other game.” Brock, who had experimented with different batting orders to try and get some of f ense, will return to his old batting order with the key moves being Zina Ochoa leading oil and Liz Mizera hitting cleanup. Mizera has again been the Aggies biggest threat with a bat. Her 18 homers led the nation Iasi season, and this season the sopho more has put six out of the parkand is A&M’s leading hitter at .309. “Liz has gotten into her home run swing,” Brock said.
