The Texas Department of Health, which said last month 26,000 would have to be cut because of decreased appropriations, said Tuesday an al ternative has been developed to at least postpone the action. After intervention by U.S. Rep. E. “Kika” de la Garza, D-Texas and Re publican Senators Thad Cochran, R- Miss., and Bob Dole, R-Kan., the Ag riculture Department is expected to release $1.5 million for the Texas WIC program. Dr. Robert Bernstein, state health commissioner, said his department was informing the 26,000 women and children of the change in plans. State Sen. Hugh Parmer, D-Fort Worth, said some of the 26,000 might be removed from the pro gram later “but it will be gradual and we hope to buy some time in hopes of getting help out of Washington.” Cattle, crops suffer under Texas sun AUSTIN — An extended dry spell in Central Texas has prompted forecasts of subpar harvests and has caused some ranchers to begin sell ing their herds, according to agricul ture experts. “We’ve got to have some relief, and it’s got to come from above,” said Wade Hibler, Travis County ag riculture extension agent, on Mon day. Austin has received 2 inches of rain this year, well below the normal average of 5.7 inches, officials of the National Weather Service said. The last significant rainfall was recorded Feb. 5. Hibler said wheat, sorghum and corn will suffer most if no soaking rains fall between now and the end of May. Those crops were planted during the past two months by farm ers who knew the soil was dry but who expected rain. Hibler also said the lack of rain makes crops more susceptible to damages from insects and disease. Some ranchers already have taken action. “They’ve started to sell off their herds, and I’m talking about A-No. 1 stock,” Hibler said. “If there’s no rain, there won’t be enough feed for them to eat.” Call Battalion Classified 845-2611 —.
