The man, known at his death as Freddie Marino, was actually re puted mob hitman Frederick Di- Nome, 45, the New York Daily News reported Monday. The paper quoted an unidentified source. The newspaper and the San Anto nio Light said Marino was in the U.S. Justice Department’s Witness Pro tection Program. Program officials in Washington, D.C., declined com ment, but a federal government source in Manhattan today con firmed that Marino was DiNome. DiNome testified last year against eight reputed mobsters accused of operating an international car-theft ring, including reputed Gambino family godfather Paul Castellano. Castellano was shot to death in New York Dec. 16, but the trial of the others continued. It ended last week and thejury is deliberating. Officials investigating Marino’s death have clamped gag orders on local authorities involved in the case and federal authorities refuse to comment, the Light reported Sun day. The Bexar County Medical Exam iner’s office is continuing toxicology tests to determine the cause of death, the newspaper reported, but the Light said an unidentified room mate reported finding the body hanging from a bedpost last Wednesday. Clinton Phillips, dean of faculties at Texas A&M, said A&M is not im mune to such problems. “I’m sure you’d find people who wish they hadn’t made the decisions they did make,” he said. But he added this is probably true with all professions. The Opinion Research Corpora tion conducted the survey in connec tion with a two-year study of under graduate education by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The results were pub lished in a story by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The report also said 45 percent of faculty members would advise against starting an academic career these days. The report said uneasiness over the educational condition of the schools and both the personal and professional conditions of their ca reers were reasons for the faculty’s negative viewpoint. Phillips said he feels some A&M faculty members are dissatisfied with their salaries. “I will admit when you’re driving a 12-year-old car and you can’t af ford a baby sitter, you feel under paid and wish you’d made another (career) decision,” he said. “The money doesn’t seem important when you’re younger. Most people are drawn into the academic world be cause they are drawn to teaching and research, and enjoy working with kids.” Faculty members from all types of institutions — public and private, large and small, and two-year and four-year — were questioned in the survey. The survey said faculty members reported a decline in job security, limited opportunities for advance ment and considerable personal strain because of their work. Phillips said, “Many faculty mem bers reach the position of professor when they’re 30. They are at the pin nacle of their profession, and there are not many upward roots once they reach professor.” According to the survey, about 70 percent of all faculty members say their interests lie in teaching, despite heavy emphasis on research as a ba sis for professional advancement. The survey said the prevailing faculty view is that academic stan dards are too low, studei® weak, campus intellectual ment is fair at best and faw pensation and working c* 3 are inadequate. The survey also said neaf fourth of the faculty mem^ the quality of undergraduate tion provided by their ort" lions has declined in the years.
