Sherrill takes verbal swipe
at Paterno for past remark
Associated Press
PITTSBURGH —Texas A&M
Coach Jackie Sherrill, former
head coach at the University of
Pittsburgh, used an appearance
at a sports banquet to take a ver
bal shot at longtime rival Joe Pa
terno.
Sherrill hinted he remains up
set at remarks made several years
ago when Paterno said he wasn’t
ready to retire from his head
coaching job at Penn State be
cause that would leave college
football in the hands of “the
Barry Switzers and Jackie Sher
rills.”
Paterno apologized to Switzer
before the Jan. 1 Orange Bowl,
when Oklahoma defeated Penn
State to win the national
championship.
Paterno said he made the re
mark at what was supposed to be
an off-the-record gathering with
reporters and that he did not
know Switzer at the time.
Sherrill, speaking Sunday at
the 50th annual Dapper Dan
sports banquet in Pittsburgh, said
he has never received an apology
from Paterno.
“Some years ago, Joe Paterno
made a statement about the Barry
Switzers and Jackie Sherrills of
college football,” Sherrill said.
“Barry Switzer got a letter of
apology this year. I guess I have
to beat Penn State in a bowl game
to get my letter.”
Lady Ags crush Frogs, 97-79
Jordan highlights A8cM attack with 19 points
FORT WORTH — The Texas A&M women’s bas
ketball team improved its chances for a Southwest
Conference postseason tournament bid with a 97-79
win over TCU at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Tuesday
night.
Although A&M top scorer Lisa Langston failed to
hit double figures, the Lady Aggies (14-9 overall, 7-4 in
SWC) had four players who did.
Freshman center Lisa Jordan led the Lady Ags scor
ing attack with 19 points.
Aggie center Nette Garrett had 17 points while ju
nior forward Paula Crutcher added 13 points and
pulled down nine rebounds.
Sophomore forward Evelyn Sanders tossed in 11 for
the Aggies, while guard Beth Young led in the assists
department with four.
All five Horned Frog starters scored in double fig
ures with Terri Janak and Carol Glover leading the
way with 14 apiece.
But the Lady Aggies were never in trouble in the
game as they raced to a 52-38 halftime lead.
The Horned Frogs (5-18, 1-11) were outrebounded
50-36 in the game and had 25 turnovers compared to
A&M’s 18.
With the win over TCU, the Lady Aggies gained a
solid hold on fourth place in the conference.
A&M is now ready for the stretch run to the SWC
Tournament in March.
That begins with their next game which is against
the nation’s No. 1 team, Texas, Saturday night in Aus
tin.
Following the trip to Austin, the Aggies will host
Texas Tech Feb. 18 and Houston on Feb. 22 before
winding up with two road games to Rice and Arkansas.
