No. 1 Tar Heels squeeze

ATLANTA — Brad Daugherty sent the game into
overtime with a 10-footer from the baseline and then
gave top-ranked North Carolina the lead it never re
linquished as the Tar Heels overcame a 13-point sec
ond-half deficit and edged No. 2 Georgia Tech 78-77
in an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball game Tues
day night.
Joe Wolf hit four free throws in the final 46 seconds
of overtime, including two that iced the game with 11
seconds left in the first meeting this season between
teams ranked first and second in The Associated Press
poll.
Georgia Tech appeared to have the game under
control when Mark Price sank two free throws with
11:56 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets a 59-46
lead.
Wolf started a 9-0 run by the Tar Heels, who even
tually cut the lead to two points on a 20-footer by
freshman Jeff Lebo with 4:55 to play.

Gilmore had a game-high 30 points,
including five in overtime, to pace
the San Antonio Spurs to a 124-119
victory over the Seattle SuperSonics
Tuesday night in National Basket
ball Association play.
Seattle’s Ricky Sobers had tied the
game at 111 on a layup with 17 sec
onds left. The Spurs, who played
without normal starters Johnny
Moore and Steve Johnson, still had a
chance to win in regulation but a late
jumper by Mike Mitchell was no
good.
Gilmore took the first four points
in overtime and the Spurs were
never threatened after that.
San Antonio, now 27-24, shot 61.3
percent from the field but com
mitted 21 turnovers that led to 30
points for Seattle, which dropped to
17-32.
The Spurs rode a 12-6 streak late
in the first half to take a 61-51 lead
at intermission as Gilmore scored 17
points and Mitchell added 14. They
frittered away a 7-point lead in the
last three minutes of regulation,
while Sobers scored six points.
Mitchell recorded his first triple
double (26 points, 10 rebounds and
10 assists), and guards Wes Mat
thews and Alvin Robertson added 23
