LE.CT0RE.... -TT YES, THIS IS THENEWEPITKW OF THE REQUIRED COURSE textbook(vjkittew by 10JR VERY OWN PROFESSOR) WITH XACT TRANSCRIPTS OF ALL HIS LECTURES Associated Press DALLAS — They all agreed in Carol Jackson’s fifth-grade class that space travel is a good thing and that the country should keep launching space missions. But when the hands were counted in the small room at Stevens Park El ementary School in Oak Cliff, all were not sure that another teacher — particularly their own — should g°- “I don’t want Ms. Jackson to get blown up,” Angel Howard, 11, said flatly. Across the Dallas area Wednes day, schoolchildren were caught be tween their natural enthusiasm for the idea of space adventure and the real prospect of danger or death it can pose. Their classroom discussions about the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger found them struggling with how tough some choices must be. In this fifth-grade classroom, a vote was taken and the decision was 8-5 that their teacher should still go if she had the chance. “If she was to go, she could come back and represent our school,” said Michelle Warr, 10, weighing the matter. “It’s only one in a trillion that it could blow up.” Guadalupe Torres, 10, said, “If Ms. Jackson should go up in space she should have a year or two train ing, and if it catches on fire, they should have a way to get out.” All the students said they had seen the television broadcasts that showed the Challenger, with New Hamp shire teacher Christa McAuliffe aboard, disintegrate after blastoff. Some said they were still sad when they thought of the teacher’s family watching. That was enough to make some decide other teachers should stay on the ground. Sunsharae Smith, 10, said, “If Ms. ackson wanted to go up, I would tell er not to go. But if she wanted to go anyway, I would tell them to hold the countdown until I ran back home and got my things to go with her.” Several students said they had de cided that only astronauts, who are professionals at traveling in space, should take the risk from now on. Amy Mireles, 10, said, “Astro nauts are trained, they have been up there before. . . .” THlV EDlT|0A^/5 APPR0VEP By THE DEPARTMENT HEAD AND REPLACED THE PREVIOUS REQUIRED EDITDV HOW MUCH WOULD YOU BE WILLING to pay: $IF? ..NOW BUY THE. But normal days ended in a split second over the Atlantic Ocean, and most of NASA was frozen in time Thursday. NASA spokesman Terry White said experts pored over data and held meetings as part of the investi gation into the explosion of Chal lenger Tuesday, but thousands of other workers were left idle because the space program has been put on hold. Normally training and planning for future missions continues at the Johnson Space Center while a shut tle is in space. The place is usually a whirlwind of activity. Instead, gloomy NASA employees walked around the campus-like com plex Thursday, some watching re porters at work and some observing preparations for President Reagan’s visit Friday. Astronaut training, mission plan ning and preparation, research and engineering, tracking and commu nications have all been suspended. NASA official Charlotte Hines said astronauts were “coordinating ef forts for the families,” and r.f sume training Monday. At the Kennedy Space fe Florida, work to get other T ready came to a standstill.
