The victory was also Dallas’ first over the Midwest Division leaders in four games this season. The all-time series stands at 20-14 in favor of the Rockets. The Mavericks’ leading scorer — Mark Aguirre, who is averaging 22.5 points — sat out his second straight game with a pulled muscle in his rib cage. But with Blackman and Perkins leading the way from the opening buzzer, Aguirre’s presence apparently was not missed. The 27-14 Rockets, led by Akeem Olajuwon’s 31 points and 17 re bounds, were ahead just once, 9-8, early in the first quarter. Dallas, now 19-18, built up a 15-point lead, 37-22, at the end of the first quarter and increased it to 73-51 at halftime. Spurs 116, Trail Blazers 105 PORTLAND, Ore. — Artis Gilmore and Steve Johnson took the inside and Alvin Robertson dominated the outside Sunday night to help San Anto nio to a 116-105 National Basketball Association victory against the Port land Trail Blazers. Johnson pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and Gilmore added 10 to overpower the Blazers under the boards, despite Mychal Thompson’s nine-rebound effort. Thompson was the top scorer in the contest with 25 points but Robertson had 24 and Gilmore fired in 23 to help San Antonio to the win. The loss drops Portland to 26-19 record while San Antonio moves up to 23-19 in the Midwest Division of the Western Gonference. Other Sunday NBA Scores (home team in capitals) L.A. Saturday, the A&M women’s team coasted to an 8-1 win over Michigan, while the men were dropped by the Wolverines, 5-4. But Sunday, the opposite proved true as the men knocked off host Michigan State, 8-1, and the women were downed 5-4 by Georgia. In Sunday’s women’s action, A&M’s usually strong doubles teams lost all three matches. “It’s the first time doubles have let us down (this season),” A&M wom en’s coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “We were in every match. We could have won just as easily as we lost. But we’re a young team and the pressure got to us. “Our singles were fantastic though. We came from behind in the No. 1 (Vanne Akagi), (No.) 2 (Kim Labuschagne) and (No.) 4 (He len Christiaanse) matches.” The only loss for the men Sunday came when the doubles team of Mark Smith and Russ Simmons, A&M’s No. 1 tandem for this tour ney, lost to MSU’s Paul Mesaros and Craig Schembri 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. A&M men’s coach David Kent said the team played better than Sat urday, but added, “We haven’t been home yet. We need to get back home and get some practice in.” Kent said Kimmo Alkio, A&M’s No. 1 singles player, and the doubles teams are off to a great start and should only improve as the season progresses.
