That hurt us a lot/’ The nine-team tournament, hosted by Lamar, is being played at the Wildwood Country Club. According to Atkins, the course at Wildwood is more suited to the Ag gies’ style of golf, compared with those they faced on the West Coast. Atkins said the putting greens at the Stanford and Sacramento State Invitationals were much faster than those the Ags are used to putting on. “The greens were very fast, but we just didn’t make the adjustm- ments,” A&M Coach Kitty Holley said. However, Atkins said, Wildwood will be another story. “It (Wildwood) should be under much more of the same conditions that we are used to playing on,” Hol ley said. “And putting can make you or break you.” Faccini, in particular, would like to see the Aggies make it this week end as she plays in her final colle giate tourney. “I don’t look forward to losing Su sie,” Holley said. “But that’s the na ture of the game. Just when you get them where you want them, it’s time for them to leave.” The four Aggie freshmen will have added pressure to take up the slack of Faccini, who is graduating, since she was the Ags’ most consis tent player this fall. “We’ll have to depend on the freshmen,” Atkins said. “They’re just going to have to play well.” Holley said two freshmen in par ticular, Adriana Penuela and Mari ana Oyanguren, done just that this fall. Atkins said she hopes the Lady Cardinal Tournament, which starts Sunday and runs through Tuesday, will give the Ags a chance to bounce back after not only a poor showing in California, but a rough fall. “I’m not really pleased with the way we’ve played this fall,” Atkins said. Aggie netters to face SWC’s best—again By KEN SURY Sports Writer While the Texas A&M football team faces one Southwest Confer ence foe in Fort Worth this week end, the A&M mens’ tennis team will be there to battle the entire SWC. Texas Christian will be the site of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association (ITCA) Regional Tennis Tournament, Friday through Sun day. Players from all nine SWC schools and other Texas colleges will compete for spots in the ITCA Na tionals in Houston, Feb. 6-9. To eartj an automatic bid to the ITCA Nationals, the singles player or doubles team must finish in either first or second place in this tourney. Other players may earn a berth to the national tournament by ITCA invitation only. A&M Men’s Tennis Coach David Kent said the ITCA regionals will definitely he a lough tournament, but added, “This is a chance to show what we can do (against tough SWC competition like Southern Methodist and Texas).” And the competition should be stiff in Fort Worth, with 12 of the nation’s Top 50 collegiate singles players (according to ITCA’s presea son poll) scheduled to be at the tour nament. SMU alone boasts half of that “I think this year our forte will he our teuw depth, We’ve had a good fall because of our senior leadership, Kimmo Alkio and Russ Simmons are both (jualitvpeo ple and excellent players. ” — A&M Men's Tennis Coach David Kent number with John Ross (No. 4), Richey Renebeva (No. 5), Mark Styslinger (No 18), Den Bishop (No. 30), Stefan Kruger (No. 34) and Ed Ross (No. 50). This is the last fall tournament fa f:. the Aggies in 1985 and Kent sail he's excited about the upcontiafl spring season. The doubles competition should be just as intense. A&M’s Alkio and Marcel Vos are ranked 21st in the preseason ITCA poll, but the Texas tandem of Deppe and Charles Beck man own the No. 3 spot.
