Most Arab delegations, including Jordan’s, walked out when Peres took the podium, their customary reaction when Israeli leaders speak. The delegation from Egypt, which signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, remained in the hall. “I hereby proclaim: The state of war between Israel and Jordan should be terminated immediately,” Peres said. “Israel declares this read ily in the hope that King Hussein is willing to reciprocate this step.” Peres suggested negotiations take place before the end of this year, in Jordan, Israel or any location as mu tually agreed upon. “We will be pleased to attend an opening meet ing in Amman (Jordan’s capi tal),’’Peres said. The Israeli prime minister seemed to be answering a speech King Hussein of Jordan delivered here Sept. 27, in which Hussein de- hi promptly and directly with Israel within the framework of an interna tional peace conference. There were gaps between the po sition expressed Monday by Peres and Hussein’s call for a conference including all parties to the Middle East conflict and the five permanent members of the Security Council: the United States, Britain, China, France and the Soviet Union. He seemed to rule out partici pation by the Palestine Liberation Organization. Hussein and PLO chairman Yasser Arafat reached agreement in February on a joint ap proach to peace in the Middle East, and the king insists the PLO be in volved. Peres called on Palestinians to put down their arms. “Let us talk. Come forth and recognize the state of Is rael,” the prime minister said. A Jordanian diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the speech was beautifully drafted, but Hussein’s government would need to study it caref ully. 600 attend New York funeral for Klinghoffer Associated Press NEW YORK — Leon Klinghof- fer’s body, cast into the sea during a terrorist hijacking, was buried on Monday. The death of this crippled man was “a holocaust of one,” said his rabbi. “There was no justification for Leon’s murder,” Rabbi Harvey Tat- telbaum said. “I cannot conceive of his brutal slaying being God’s will. Many things are finite. But not hu man stupidity and human cruelty.” More than 600 attended the fune ral in Manhattan, including Cov. Mario Cuomo, Mayor Edward I. Koch, Sens. Daniel P. Moynihan and Alfonse D’Amato, and two represen tatives of the Israeli government. After the service, the casket was taken to Beth David Memorial Park in Kenilworth, N.J. Klinghoffer, wheelchair-bound because of two strokes, was aboard the Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro when it was hijacked on Oct. 7. Au thorities say the terrorists shot him and then ordered crew members to throw him into the Mediterranean. Klinghoffer’s wife Marilyn kissed her hand and touched it to the coffin as she entered the synagogue. Her daughters — Lisa, 34, and lisa, 28 — walked beside her. Ilsa looked toward the coffin. “Daddy, you worked so hard, had so much hardship and never com plained. The world knows you now as a hero, but you were always a hero to us,” she said. A family friend, Charlotte Spie gel, also spoke. She remembered a “very good friend, a gentle man of humble origins,” who battled back from two strokes and recently con fided he hoped to muster the strength to walk Ilsa down the aisle at her upcoming wedding. Instead, he was “the victim of a mad and depraved bunch of crimi nals,” said Spiegel, who also was a passenger on the Achille Lauro’s cruise. Tattelbaum compared Klinghof fer’s death to the biblical misfor tunes of Jonah and Job. “Who are those who murdered Leon? They are simply murderers, liars and thugs,” the rabbi said. ith Dods. and ButW sa ECIAL ENIN 6 linner h uce ss'mg & Butter aa ry. Were looking for the best to put in our bag!
