The rookie got neither, but he did get the victory for the Houston As tros Tuesday, with help from Dave Smith, who retired the last two bat ters in a 2-0 decision over the At lanta Braves. “That’s the best game I’ve pitched since I’ve been here,” said Kerfeld, now 3-2. The right-hander went 8 1/3 in nings and scattered four hits while striking out six. The big factor was that he gave up just two walks. “I only walked a few,” said Ker feld, who had walked 21 batters in 30 innings. “That’s where my prob lems have been this year.” Only one Atlanta runner reached second against him. Kerfeld, who was recalled from the Astros Triple-A affiliate in Tuc son on Sept. 2, plans to work hard to assure himself a spot on next year’s roster. “My goal coming out of spring training is to be the fourth starter,” Kerfeld said. “I know I have the abil ity and I think they do to.” Phil Garner and Dickie Thon drove in second-inning runs for Houston. Alan Ashby drew a walk from Steve Bedrosian, 7-15, and scored on Garner’s hit-and-run double to left-center field. Jim Pankovits also drew a walk before Thon sent Gar ner home with a single to left. The victory gave the Astros a 79- 78 record, including a final 44-37 mark in the Astrodome. The game drew an announced crowd of 2,600, giving the Astros a season-total at tendance of 1,182,541 compared to last year’s 1,229,861. Guzman, 3-2, gave up seven hits, walked four and struck out a career- high six batters. He left in the ninth in favor of Rich Surhoff, who got his second save. Guzman had not al lowed an earned run in 22 1/3 in nings before Dave Kingman hit his 29th homer for Oakland in the eighth. Chris Codiroli, 13-14, pitched the first five innings to take the loss. The Rangers scored three runs in the first. Wayne Tolleson singled with one out and advanced to second on Pete O’Brien’s groundout. Larry Parrish singled to score Tolleson and Cary Ward singled to put run ners at first and second. They ad vanced Codiroli’s wild pitch and scored on Slaught’s single. Texas made it a 4-0 game on O’Brien’s leadoff homer in the fifth, his 22nd. Alfredo Griffin’s run-scoring hit accounted for ther final Oakland run in the ninth. This week, SMU (2-0) is No. 3, while Arkansas (3-0) is in the No. 10 spot. Baylor (3-1) is No. 19 and Texas (2-0) is 20th. On Oct. 6, 1980, the same four SWC teams earned berths in the AP poll. Texas was No. 3, Arkansas No. 15, Baylor No. 18 and SMU, just starting its football revival, was No. 20. Texas Coach Fred Akers said the latest poll indicates that the SWC is be ginning to get the respect he thinks it deserves. “I’ve said all along that this is the toughest conference in the country and I think that the rankings are beginning to reflect that,” Akers said. Baylor Coach Grant Teaff said he’s more concerned with this Saturday’s game against Houston than with the Bears’ standing in the polls. “I’d rather beat Houston than be ranked No. 1,” Teaff said. “The most important thing right now for our ball club is to beat Houston. “If we’re still going good in three or four weeks, it’s fine being ranked in the Top 20. If we lose a game in the next three weeks what does being in the Top 20 mean now? It doesn’t mean a cotton-picking thing.” Papers Due Tomorrow? Call us today!! ^Y/0RDS...-togo 1055 S.
