Ankrom veers TCU on right road
Associated Press
FORT WORTH — Sophomore
Scott Ankrom isn’t exactly a stranger
to the TCU veer offense.
He appeared long enough as the
Horned Frog quarterback last year
to throw a school record 99-yard
touchdown pass and reel off runs of
51,33, and 31 yards.
Ankrom saw action in all 11
games, but the San Antonio Jay
High School product didn’t have
much of a chance to display his sub
4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash.
Ankrom was certainly showcased
Saturday night in TCU’s 30-13 vic
tory over Tulane as he earned The
Associated Press Southwest Confer-
“Scott Ankrom played like a sophomore quarterback
with a heck of a lot of talent. ”
— TCU Head Football Coach Jim Wacker
ence Offensive Player of the Week
award.
Winning the AP’s SWC Defensive
Player of the Week laurel was Ar
kansas linebacker Nick Miller, who
had seven unassisted tackles and
made the big stop on fourth and one
at the Arkansas 22 in a 24-19 victory
over Ole Miss.
Ankrom scored oh runs of 19 and
1 yards and winged a 20-yard scor
ing pass to Ricky Stone.
“It felt good as a starter,” Ankrom
said. “I really wasn’t nervous going
into the game. I was fired up. 1 made
some mistakes but that’s the only
way that I’ll learn.”
TCU Coach Jim Wacker said he
was expecting great things from
Ankrom.
“Scott Ankrom played like a soph-
lot of talent,” Wacker said. “He just
needs to settle down some and I
think he did that in the second half.
Ankrom rushed for 122 yards on
21 carries and passed for 142 yards
by hitting 10 of 1 7 attempts.
All-American running back Ken
neth Davis, who had 152 yards rush
ing, had high praise for his new
backfield mate:
“I think Scott impressed a lot of
people,” Davis said.“They hadn’t
seen much of him. But I tell you
what I wasn’t surprised all because
I’ve seen him play and I knew what
he can do. He’s going to be a great
quarterback.”

LUFKIN — Texas A&M finished
second, 33 stokes behind the NCAA
national champion Houston Cou
gars, in the Southwest Conference
Commissioner’s Cup Golf Cham
pionships Tuesday.
Houston’s Marc Pendaries and
Tray Tyner shot 4-under-par 68’s in
the final round as the Cougars cap
tured their 11th title in the SWC
Commissioner’s Cup title.
Houston finished the 54-hole
tournament with a total of 688, fol
lowed by A&M at 721, Arkansas
(726), SMU (732), TCU (738), Rice
(746), Texas (751), Texas Tech (758)
and Baylor at 761.
Stroke play champions were Pen
daries and Houston’s Tony Mollica,
with a combined total of 138 on the
6,842-yard Crown Colony Country
Club course.
The Cougars have won 11 fall
SWC tournaments and shared one
in 14 years,of fall championships.
Texas won in 1977 and 1975, while
Houston tied Texas A&M in 1979.
The tournament has had a variety
of formats. Since 1980 it has been
consecutive rounds of best-ball, al
ternate-shot and regular stroke play,
with Houston winning all six since
the format began.
“If this were the NCAA cham
pionships, I believe we could have
won it the way we played today,” said
Houston Coach Dave Williams,
whose teams have won 16 NCAA ti
tles.
“This is one of our greatest victo
ries ever. We lost four seniors from
last year’s NCAA champions. I don’t
know of any team in 35 years as a
coach that has played any better. Ev
erybody was writing us off for this
year. No one thought we could do
this.”
