He appeared long enough as the Horned Frog quarterback last year to throw a school record 99-yard touchdown pass and reel off runs of 51,33, and 31 yards. Ankrom saw action in all 11 games, but the San Antonio Jay High School product didn’t have much of a chance to display his sub 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash. Winning the AP’s SWC Defensive Player of the Week laurel was Ar kansas linebacker Nick Miller, who had seven unassisted tackles and made the big stop on fourth and one at the Arkansas 22 in a 24-19 victory over Ole Miss. Ankrom scored oh runs of 19 and 1 yards and winged a 20-yard scor ing pass to Ricky Stone. “It felt good as a starter,” Ankrom said. “I really wasn’t nervous going into the game. I was fired up. 1 made some mistakes but that’s the only way that I’ll learn.” TCU Coach Jim Wacker said he was expecting great things from Ankrom. “Scott Ankrom played like a soph- lot of talent,” Wacker said. “He just needs to settle down some and I think he did that in the second half. Ankrom rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries and passed for 142 yards by hitting 10 of 1 7 attempts. All-American running back Ken neth Davis, who had 152 yards rush ing, had high praise for his new backfield mate: “I think Scott impressed a lot of people,” Davis said.“They hadn’t seen much of him. But I tell you what I wasn’t surprised all because I’ve seen him play and I knew what he can do. Houston’s Marc Pendaries and Tray Tyner shot 4-under-par 68’s in the final round as the Cougars cap tured their 11th title in the SWC Commissioner’s Cup title. Houston finished the 54-hole tournament with a total of 688, fol lowed by A&M at 721, Arkansas (726), SMU (732), TCU (738), Rice (746), Texas (751), Texas Tech (758) and Baylor at 761. Stroke play champions were Pen daries and Houston’s Tony Mollica, with a combined total of 138 on the 6,842-yard Crown Colony Country Club course. The Cougars have won 11 fall SWC tournaments and shared one in 14 years,of fall championships. Texas won in 1977 and 1975, while Houston tied Texas A&M in 1979. The tournament has had a variety of formats. Since 1980 it has been consecutive rounds of best-ball, al ternate-shot and regular stroke play, with Houston winning all six since the format began. “If this were the NCAA cham pionships, I believe we could have won it the way we played today,” said Houston Coach Dave Williams, whose teams have won 16 NCAA ti tles. “This is one of our greatest victo ries ever. We lost four seniors from last year’s NCAA champions. I don’t know of any team in 35 years as a coach that has played any better. Ev erybody was writing us off for this year.
