Cisneros, who spoke mostly in Spanish during his 10-minute speech, arrived in Laredo hours af ter attending similar functions in his hometown. “In Los Angeles and New York, in Miami and Dallas, in Houston and yes in San Antonio, tonight also is for celebrating this occasion,” he said. “The reason is because we cele brate something much more impor tant than the birth of one nation; we celebrate human courage; we cele brate a spirit of liberty; we celebrate ideals that will live year after year,” Cisneros said. Cisneros, who served on a biparti san commission on Latin America, was introduced as a man who bridged the gap between Anglos and Hispanics. Early Sunday, Laredo officials met their Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, counterparts at the international bridge for a 45-minute ceremony. A Laredo high school band played the Mexican national anthem and Nuevo Laredo’s city band played “The Star Spangled Banner.” State Sen. John Sharp of Victoria was the master of ceremonies for the bilingual occasion. “We Americans are here to join our Mexican friends and cross this bridge of friendship, to Mexican soil and to celebrate with them their day of days,” Sharp said. After the ceremony, Cisneros served as grand marshal for a pa rade that wound through the streets of Laredo across the international bridge into Nuevo Laredo. In Laredo, activities have in cluded golf and softball tourna ments, music festivals and dances, a midget bullfight and rodeo and arts and crafts exhibits. In Nuevo Laredo, the celebration began several weeks ago and will be capped Monday. Cities across the southern United States with large Mexican American communities celebrate “Dieciseis de Septiembre,” or Sept. 16th. On the evening of Sept. 15, 1810, a Mexican priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costillo called on Mexicans to revolt against their Spanish rulers. Septem ber 16th has since been regarded as Mexico’s equivalent to the U.S. cele bration of the Fourth of July. “It is a very special occasion for men and women across the world who recognize that in the human spirit yearns the need to be indepen- aent, to be free,” Cisneros said. lot^D^DANfTrl Dog Days of Summer Reveille V and her handler Doug Beall of Company E-2 find a cool spot in the shade before yell practice Thursday.
