Rumbaugh, 18, executed because of teenage crime
Associated Press
HUNTSVILLE — Charles Rum
baugh was put to death by poison in
jection early today for murdering a
jeweler when he was 17 years old,
the first execution in more than two
decades for a crime committed by
someone under the age of 18.
Rumbaugh, 28, was pronounced
dead at 12:27 a.m. CDT, said Jim
Mattox, the state attorney general.
Hours before his death, Rum
baugh was “cutting jokes and laugh

relatives in a cell a few feet from the
death chamber, said corrections de

“I believe in reincarnation. Whatever I did in my pre
vious life must have been pretty bad to deserve this.
Maybe when I come back next time, I’ll have learned
something. ”
— Convicted killer Charles Rumbaugh
Amnesty International, which op
poses capital punishment, had pro
tested Rumbaugh’s execution, say
ing it violated international
agreements — never ratified by the
U.S. Senate — that bar execution of
people convicted of crimes com
mitted when they were under 18.
“What that has to do with the
death penalty, I don’t know,” Rum
baugh said a week ago in his last in
terview with reporters. “It’s not
going to have any effect.
“I believe in reincarnation,” he
said. “Whatever I did in my previous
life must have been pretty bad to de
serve this. Maybe when I cornel
next time, I’ll have learned son
thing.”
