Company gets settlement
after 12-year legal dispute
Associated Press
EL PASO — In a settlement of a
long-standing legal dispute, El Paso
Natural Gas Co. has agreed to assign
its oil and gas rights in the San Juan
Basin of northwestern New Mexico
to two of its major gas producers.
The agreement, recently ap
proved by the Federal Energy Regu
latory Commission, was announced
by company officials in El Paso
Wednesday.
Under the settlement, El Paso
Natural Gas no longer will pay costly
overriding royalties to Conoco Inc.
and Tenneco Oil Co., and will give
up ownership of expensive petro
leum “liquids” to the two oil compa
nies. But El Paso Natural Gas will
continue to buy gas from the prop
erties for its interstate natural gas
system.

A spokesman for El Paso Natural
Gas, John McFall, said Wednesday
that no estimate was available on
how much money the company will
save through no longer paying the
overriding royalties.
“But it won’t result in any extraor
dinary gain or loss to the company,”
he said.
