Florida and Miami, however, get together at the start. The Orange Bowl will have a rare sellout when fifth-ranked Florida visits Miami Saturday night. The game matches two coaches who are former colleagues. Florida’s Galen Hall and Miami’s i immy Johnson were on the Okla- oma staff together from 1970-72. They arrived in the State of Florida last year by different routes. While Johnson’s travels took him from Ok lahoma to Arkansas to Pitt to Okla homa State (as head coach from 1979-83), Hall remained at Okla homa until last season, when he be came Florida’s offensive coordina tor. Hall has yet to lose as a head coach. He replaced Charley Pell three games into the 1984 season and posted an 8-0 record the rest of the way. The Gators are S'/a-point favorites e 5 72-pc but the pick is 24-21, Miami. By DOUG HALL Sports Writer When you think of cross-country, the movie Cannonball Run, about a car race from New York to Los An geles, comes to mind. After a Fifth-place Southwest Con ference finish last season, the Texas A&M cross-country team is ready to race its way across the standings. A&M’s cross-country season, which opens with the A&M Invita tional on Sept. 12 and continues un til late November, is the first of the three track seasons in which the Ag gies compete. A&M s indoor and outdoor track and field seasons start in the spring. Cross-country meets consist of a three-mile course for the women and a five-mile course for the men. Most meets are usually run on a golf course, as the A&M Inivitational will be, or on any grassy surface. Each team enters seven runners, of which Five can place. A&M Coach Fed Nelson admits the Aggies’ chances of moving up in the conference standings look slim. Arturo Barrios, one of the na tion's premier cross-country run tiers, used up his eligibility last year after a second-place finish at SWC meet in Austin. In addition to losing Barriot, years’ No. 3 runner, Huey In will be red-shirted. Despite a lack of experience,!) son predicts a strong perform from his seven-man squad in SWC. which had six teams in the lion’s Top 25. “We think we’re going to be mi better this year,” Nelson said, reallv had a good recruiting veai just all depends on how those you Sec Cross-Country, page I U.S. Open (Continued from Page 9) games of the second set and the third game of the third. “I played pretty well; he really wasn’t,” Connors said. “I wanted to jump on top of him early.” And that Connors did, wrapping up the match in five minutes short of two hours. Lendl was awesome in taking apart the game of Noah, the 1983 French Open champion and winner of the Italian Open earlier this year. The athletic Frenchman was never in contention, even though he easily won t he opening game of each set. He took Lendl to deuce in the sec ond game of the match as the crowd in Louis Armstrong Stadium at the National Tennis Center settled in for an epic struggle. They never got it, however, as Lendl smothered his opponent as much as the humidity. And in the second set, it was Lendl once again breaking away from a 1-1 deadlock, breaking Noah’s serve m the third and sev enth games en route to a two-set ad vantage. He broke his service again in the fifth game, this time at 15. At one point, late in the match, Noah flung his racket in exaspera tion at another backhand cross-court passing shot that dipped drastically to nip the sideline, knowing he couldn’t reach it. When he held serve at love in the fifth game of the third set, the Frenchman tri umphantly raised his arms into: air, sensing it was a hollow v0 but a victory just the same.
