Thursday, September 5, 1985/The Battalion/Page 5 r Course erases violations from driving record By KATHERINE COOPER Reporter University Plus is offering 1 1 driver improvement classes this f all. Classes are offered Friday through Dec. 14, and are broken into two four-hour sessions. Classes are open to all licensed drivers in the Bryan-College Station community. However, Dr. Maurice Dermis, coordinator of the Safety Education Program, says that most of the classes are filled by students. The eight-hour class may be used to dismiss a ticket that a driver has recieved for a moving violation. To dismiss a ticket, the offender must first receive permission from the judge in traffic coirrt. The course must be taken within 90 days of the court appearance to recieve a dismissal of the ticket fine. Proof of completion of the class is required to remove the ticket from the driver’s record. Also, the driver improvement class allows those who complete the class to receive a 10 percent discount on automobile insurance for three years. This discount can save insured drivers $80 to $180 over the three year period. The class format includes driver safety tips, information about new laws and a chance for the student to DEL RIO, Texas — A woman chastized before her church congre gation for alleged adultery has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the church, apologized for filing it and sent a $4,500 check to the church. lane Murray filed an invasion of privacy suit against Northside Church of Christ in Del Rio last year after a letter of discipline was read before the congregation in Septem ber 1982. The Rev. Rickie Jenkins, pastor of the church, said the letter was deliv- update his driving skills. “Of the complaints we receive, most are about our films,” Dennis says. “We are receiving some new updated films within the next year that should remedy this problem.” The instructors are required to complete 40 hours of training, Den nis says. The first 16 hours are used for teacher preparation. The remaining ered to Murray and read in church because of her “rebellion to the will of God.” He said the church was fol lowing the Bible in disciplining a member. Jenkins said Tuesday the suit was dropped in late July in a settlement that called for Murray to pay the church $4,500 for expenses in fight ing her lawsuit. In return, the church agreed to drop its counterclaim, which sought $ 1.3 million. 24 hours are spent observing classes and teaching under a supervising in structor. Drivers may register for the class in the University Plus Craft Center located in the basement of the Me morial Student Center, and a fee of $22 must be paid in full prior to ad mission to the class. Dennis says classes sometimes are limited to Si to 40 students because “it allows for more interaction.” Jenkins, his church, three church members and Murray’s ex-husband, Bob Simmons, were named as de fendants in the suit that sought $1 million in damages. “The serious threat of this case was that a church was being sued for f iracticing its own faith within its our walls,” church attorney J. Shelby Sharp said. “If a church could be sued for being obedient to the Bible within its own four walls, then freedom of religion is virtually destroyed.” TENSION HEADACHES?
