Sunday Night Special Nets’ offer refused by Massimino Vi I la nova coach rejects $2.1 million contract Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Rollie Massimino on Thursday re jected an offer by the New Jersey Nets that would have made him one of the highest-paid coaches in the National Basketball Association and decided to stay with his family and friends at Villanova University. The fiery and emotional Massi mino turned down the deal, report edly at least $2.1 million over 10 years, after night-long negotiations, Nets President Bernie Mann said. The decision was made about 7 a.m., less than seven hours before the Nets were, to hold a press confer ence to announce a new coach, Mann said. “I felt it was in the best interests of my family, Villanova, our players and Jake Nevin to stay at Villanova,” the 51-year-old Massimino said in a statement released by the university. “The decision was very trying and tiring.” Nevin, the long-time trainer at Villanova, has Lou Gehrig’s disease. Massimino could not be reached at his home or at the university, but his wife, Mary Jane, said in a tele phone interview Thursday: “I am happy with whatever deci sion he was happy with.” That decision left the Nets with out a successor to Stan Albeck, who on Monday signed a three-year con tract with the Chicago Bulls after the Nets released him from the final year of his contract. “We’re back to square one again.” Mann said. “He was our No. 1 choice. It certainly is disappointing. We put a lot of effort into it.” The Nets also put a lot of money into the effort to lure Massimino into the professional coaching ranks. His reported salary of $375,000 annually in his first four years with New Jersey reportedly would have made him one of the five highest- paid coaches in the league. Pat Riley, coach of the Los An- f eles Lakers, makes a reported 500,000, while Albeck was said to have signed a deal worth around $350,000 with the Bulls. Mann said Nets officials planned to meet Thursday to discuss the coaching situation. Mann has fa vored hiring a college coach, but he would not say if he still favored that path in the wake of Massimino’s de- cison. Massimino has compiled a 228- 137 record in 12 seasons at Villa nova, winning the national crown last season with a thrilling upset vic tory over defending champion Georgetown. His decision to stay at the subur ban Philadelphia school was warmly welcomed by school officials, who said they were informed about 7:15 a.m. “The university as a whole is de lighted that Rollie Massimino has de cided to stay,” said Craig Miller, Vil- lanoya sports information director. •■W-- ■fa F OI *T iSliiLofl* iSTEAKHOUSEA Vf A*-- A*-- Aa- w 2 chicken fried steaks homemade rolls, choice of baked potato, french fries or rice 5-10 pm 2528 Texas Ave. S.
