Sixers not considering Daly deal with Pistons Associated Press PHILADELPHIA — The Detroit Pistons on Monday removed coach Chuck Daly from consideration for the Philadelphia 76ers head coach ing job after the Sixers refused to surrender a first-round draft choice as compensation. Daly, who has one year left on his three-year pact with Detroit, will re main with the National Basketball Association club, the Pistons an nounced. Sixers owner Harold Katz said that Assistant Coach Matty Guokas and “possibly one or two more” can didates remain under consideration to replace Billy Cunningham, who resigned last month after eight years as coach. An annoyed Katz said that the Pis tons had initially asked for two sec ond-round draft picks to release "Had we known (Detroit) wanted a first-round pick, we would have never dis cussed (a trade). ” • — 7hers owner .jfffyrM Katz Daly, then acted to “raise the ante af ter the fact.” “Had we known they had wanted a first-round pick, we would have never discussed it,” Katz said. He said the 76ers made known their position over the weekend. In Pontiac, Mich., Pistons General Manager Jack McCloskey said, “The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to reject compensation requested by the Pistons for Coach Chuck Daly. Therefore, Chuck Daly will continue as coach of the Detroit Pistons.” McCloskey indicated Friday that Detroit would not release Daly with out the 76ers’ first-round pick in ex change. Sixers General Manager Pat Wil liams, who could not be reached for comment Monday, said during the weekend that the 76ers were ready to promote Guokas if the Daly deal didn’t come through. He insisted there was “no timetable” for hiring a coach. Daly, at his home in Farmington Hills, Mich., was philosophical about losing the 76ers’job. “Obviously, I was interested,” he said. “I know the Philadelphia area extremely well and I like it there. But in this business, you learn to really love where they sign your pay- check, and I like it here (with Detr oit).” Ham* Ram RESTAURANT ‘ S&UAtHQ ‘7(7Cue curd 't£an rARTIE* AND BANQUETS WELCOMED 3*03 TEXAS AV. Sund, appearing on a KRLD ra dio sports call-in snow, said the Na tional Basketball Association team had gotten permission from the Golden State Warriors to talk to Car- roll. “We’re basically leaving the ball in his court,” Sund said. “We have not made an offer.” Sund said the Mavericks told Car- roll that if he was interested in play ing for Dallas, they would like to bring him to Texas for interviews and evaluations. Neither Carroll, nor his agent Howard Slusher, have responded yet, Sund said. “We are totally convinced that Golden State will match an offer and there will be a trade,” Sund said. Asked if that meant Dallas hoped to pursue the possibility of signing Carroll before the NBA draft June 18, Sund said, “We’re dealing from strength before the draft.” Dallas has three first-round draft choices, including the eighth pick. !► U ♦ ♦ I ► + ♦ U Problem Pregnancy? we listen, we care, we help Free pregnancy tests concerned counselors Brazos Valley Crisis Pregnancy Service We’re local! 4340 Carter Creek Pkwy Suite 107 24 hr.
