FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ivyj LIFE I’M AcnJALLS’ totally HAPPO / by Tom Batiuk /MEANWHILE , BACK IN REAUTV / Bones discovered at cabin may be those of 25 missing Associated Press WEST POINT, Calif. — Five large bags of human bones have been collected from a remote cabin where two survivalists allegedly acted out and videotaped sex ual torture fantasies, and the grisly find may provide dues to the disappearance of up to 25 people, police said Monday. One of tne suspects, Leonard Lake, 39, who killed himself by swallowing a poison pill while in police cus tody last week, once claimed membership in a San Fran cisco cult that practiced murder, a woman who knew him said. The remains of a man, woman and child already have been found on the three-acre site used by Lake, and were sent to the San Francisco County Coroner’s office for analysis, Calaveras County Coroner Terry Parker said. In addition to the bones, Calaveras County Sheriff Claud Ballard said on Sunday that police have gathered clothing, jewelry, handcuffs, pornographic photo graphs and videotapes showing scenes of sexual torture involving Lake, his companion Charles Chatt Ng and women victims. Ng, 24, the subject of a nationwide search, has been named in a warrant on three counts of kidnapping, Ca laveras Sheriffs Sgt. Ron McFall said. Videotapes found at the cabin show a partially clothed, handcuffed woman pleading with Lake and Ng to return her baby and being forced at gunpoint to perform sex acts, Ballard said, adding that authorities fear the woman might have been tortured and killed in the making of films. Police said other evidence included photographs of women and girls in various stages of undress. Some of the girls were no older than 10. Also found was a diary chronicling Lake’s daily activ ities since 1983. The diary contained an account of “Operation Mi randa,” Lake’s name for his practice of keeping women in captivity as sex slaves. The torture scenes apparently happened at a cinder- block bunker on the site containing a secret chamber equipped with a two-way mirror and a mattress. Ballard said the diary indicated a second cell chamber and burial site might exist. Fracture may be key to ID of Mengele Associated Press SAO PAULO, Brazil — Forensic experts said Monday that a possible fracture discovered on the pelvic bone of a body unearthed last week has strengthened suspicions it is that of Nazi death camp doctor Josef Mengele. Dr. Wilmes Roberto Teixeira said the pelvic bone of the remains dug up from an abandoned grave near here “is not normal” and may have been fractured. Mengele once suf fered a fractured pelvis, according to data provided by the Simon Wie- senthal Center in Los Angeles, Teix eira said at a news conference. “We have found nothing to sug gest it is not Mengele,” Teixeira said. “If we can confirm the fracture, it will be a great step forward.” A Brazilian forensic team at the city morgue began cleaning dirt and moss off the bones Monday prior to reconstructing the skeleton of the man Brazilian police believe is Mengele. “The bones are very deteriorated from their contact with earth and water in the grave, but we expected that,” Teixeira said. “All the bones are there. There are 208 bones.” He said the preliminary examina tions showed the bones “are those of a man, a tall man, and an old man. But the age is impossible to say.” Dr. Daniel Romero Munoz said the teeth were being cleaned and would be compared with Mengele’s dental records from 1937, provided by the West German government. “If they match up, we will have nearly absolute certainty that it is Mengele,” Munoz said. Teixeira said foreign specialists were “observing, but could not par ticipate,” in the procedures. He said they “may be called in later, if special tests are necessary.” In West Germany, the office of Mengele’s son said the family would issue a statement that could end de bate over whether the remains in Sao Paulo are those of the long- sought war criminal, who now would be 74. It would be the family’s first public comment. , are tl>£; 1 because; cssful, he; giant red j Danish socialite to lead 'quiet life' Jury acquits von Bulow of charges Associated Press PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A jury found Claus von Bulow innocent Monday of twice trying to murder his heiress wife with insulin injec tions, a stunning reversal of the Dan ish-born socialite’s first trial three years ago. Cheers went up in the crowded courtroom as the verdict was an nounced, and prosecutors were booed by about 150 people outside the building as they departed. “I’m very relieved, and above all I’m grateful to my attorneys,” the balding, 6-foot-3 von Bulow said. “It’s been five years of worry.” He said he now would try to lead a quiet life, give up smoking and take a vacation. Von Bulow, who was indicted on the charges in July 1981, dropped his head into his hands as the verdict was announced. He then smiled, shook hands with his attorney and embraced his lover, Andrea Rey nolds, who was openly weeping. “He knows, and we know, he tried to murder our mother,” said Alex ander von Auersperg, one of Mrs. von Bulow’s two children from her first marriage who spearheaded the investigation against their step father. A jury of eight women and four men deliberated about 14 hours over four days before reaching its verdict, which was televised live by Cable News Network. A jury in 1982 deliberated 37 hours over six days before finding von Bulow guilty, but that verdict was overturned last year by the Rhode Island Supreme Court on state constitutional grounds. “This is a jury who clearly hasn’t had any trouble coming to a deci sion,” Superior Court Judge Co- rinne P. Grande said as the jurors who had been sequestered for six weeks were taken away by sheriffs deputies. Jurors refused to comment as they held a party at the hotel. Six bottles of champagne and two cases of beer were provided by the hotel management. Von Bulow and Reynolds went to the hotel to thank the" panel mem bers. “They spent a lot of time work ing hard and I’m grateful,” von Bu low said. Von Bulow, 58, was charged with injecting Martha “Sunny” von Bulow with insulin and inducing the comas his wife suffered during Christmas vacations in 1979 and 1980 at the family’s Newport mansion. Mrs. von Bulow recovered from the first coma, but doctors say the second is irreversible. Chief defense attorney Thomas P. Puccio, the fiery former prosecutor in the Abscam cases, relied on nine medical experts in arguing that insu lin injections did not cause the co mas. Terrorists kidnap American professor in Beirut Associated Press BEIRUT, Lebanon — Kidnap pers shot out the tires and wind shield of a car carrying an American professor, dragged him from the ve hicle and took him away, police re ported Monday. The abduction raised the number of Westerners missing in Lebanon to 12. Thomas Sutherland, Scottish- born dean of the agricultural faculty at American University in Beirut, was the eighth American kidnapped in Lebanon since March 1984. Seven still are missing. Sutherland, of Fort Collins, Colo, returned from the United States on Sunday. Two carloads of gunmen seized him as he drove into the city from the airport. Maj. Gen. Osman Osman, com mander of Lebanese police, told The Associated Press there was no indica tion that Sutherland, 53, was hurt. South Beirut’s shantytowns have become a hunting ground for gun men who have kidnapped 20 West erners since March 1984. Two Frenchmen were abducted there last month. Osman said no group had claimed responsibility for seizing Sutherland, a veterinarian who graduated from Iowa State University. Speculation was widespread that he was grabbed by Jihad Island, or Islamic Holy War, a fundamentalist Shiite group that is believed to hold at least five Americans and two French hostages. Islamic Holy War, which many suspect is a general name for several anti-Western radical groups, has said it will release the Westerners it claims to hold if Kuwait frees 17 of its men jailed there for bombing the U.S. and French embassies in De cember 1983. Kuwait has refused. Despite the group’s warnings of “catastrophic consequences” to the U.S. and French governments if the 17 are not freed, Washington has declared that it will “never negotiate with ter rorists.” COLLEGE WOMEN & MEN WANTED!
