Clarence Lucas Jr. and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lucas Sr. of Austin, listen intently to Corps of Cadets Com mandant Col. Donald L. Burton during yesterday’s freshman Registration begins at noon Monday New University Plus program starts By BRIAN PEARSON Staff Writer Classes Are expected to quickly fill as registration Degins Monday at noon for a new Memorial Student Center program, University Plus. The program offers a range of ex tracurricular summer courses, in cluding tae kwon do and basket weaving. The non-credit classes will be taught by certified instructors, said Wayne Helton, the program’s super visor. Some of the more popular courses, Helton said, are country and western dance, bartending, wine appreciation, and drts and crafts. The MSC University Plus pro gram is the result of combining the After Hours Committee, a commu nity education program offering classes such as aerobics and cooking, and the MSC Crafts Center, which offered arts and crafts, Helton said. “It was decided this past spring to combine the old After Hours Com mittee and the MSC Crafts Center into one program since they offered the same source of programming opportunities,” he said. The Crafts Center, Helton said, had been run by a full-time staff while the After Hours Committee had been run by a volunteer student committee. He said the involvement in the After Hours Committee changed each semester. “The reason why they decided to combine the two programs was to al low for more professional manage ment so the program would be more consistent from year to year and not suffer slumps and cyclic things like some student organizations do,” he said. Helton said both programs were very successful. Classes are open to anyone over 18. Faculty Senate to meet Monday By KAREN BLOCH Staff Writer A recommendation that the final oral examination be optional for non-thesis master’s degree candi dates will be considered by the Fac ulty Senate Monday. Dr. Jaan Laane, senate speaker, said Thursday that the Graduate Council’s proposal should draw de bate among senators because the graduate dean is opposed to it, but a majority of the other council mem bers support it. Laane also said that the new policy on sick leave for state employees may be discussed in an emergency session. A rider to the 1986-87 state ap propriations bill forbids state em ployees to accrue sick leave if they work less than 12 months of the year. Prior to the passage of this bill, all employees earned one day of sick leave per month. Laane said he believes that Texas universities will be the only ones in the country with this policy. “The policy’s ridiculous,” Laane said. “You can’t expect all the people to be well all the time.” Other items the senate will discuss include the procedure used in desig nating professor emeritus status, new courses and course withdrawals. Col. Donald L. Burton will give an update of the August hazing inci dent in which sophomore cadet Bruce Goodrich died after “motiva tional exercises.” The effects of this incident on the Corps of Cadets will be discussed.
