The open house, sponsored by A&M’s Association of American Astronomers, is sponsored in rec ognition of National Astronomy Day Saturday. The doors of the observatory will open to the public at about 6 p.m. on both Friday and Satur day, said Darrin Fewer, a mem ber of the club. “We’d really like as many peo ple to come out as possible,” Fewer said. “It is really fun and many of the sights are very pret ty.” The group plans to look at the first-quarter moon, §aturn, clus ters and various galaxies in space, he said. The American Astronomers Club is one of the newer groups on campus. It was recognized in December, and now has about 36 members, Fewer said. The club was organized by Fewer and Douglas McGregor to bring to gether students interested in as tronomy. Fewer said the club wants to buy some land of its own l deep-sky observing and i photography. Researcher to relive landim of French explorer in Texas Associated Press INDIANOFA — When Paul Hammerschmidt takes a big step out of a rowboat this weekend, he’ll be Paul Hammerschmidt is ptaying the role of the leaping back 300 years as Calhoun County-area residents celebrate the anniversary of the 1685 landing in Texas of the French explorer Fa- Salle. Hammerschmidt, a Texas Depart ment of Parks and Wildlife fish re searcher, is playing the role of the 17th century explorer in the re-en actment of the landing near what now is — or was — Indianola, an iso lated former port on Matagorda Bay about 140 miles southwest of Hous ton. “When you do this only once ev ery 300 years, you try to get it right,” Hammerschmidt says. On Saturday, he’ll don handmade garments typical of the period, plus a long wig, and with a crew of six, paddle ashore just a few feet from where FaSalle, in the form of a large granite monument, stares out over the bay. The re-enactment caps three years of research by Fonnie Ficklen, of nearby Port Favaca, who has sought help from French govern ment officials and used as a refer ence a journal kept by one of Fa- Salle’s men in an effort to make the presentation as accurate as possible. Salle, He will re-enact the landing about 140 miles southwest of Houston. Re searchers used a journal kept by one of LaSalle's men On Saturday, a restored Off junk, similar in design tooneof' ships FaSalle used, will bringL» and his companions to within;' hundred yards of the beach,W merschmidt said. Then the exp!® 1 whose companions include af nalist, Catholic priest, atde,ai- shoni Indian and his brothei, jump into a rowboat and held shore. “It will be as historically correct as one can make it,” Ficklen says. Historians differ on why Rene Robert Cavelier Sieur de la Salle landed where he did in Texas. Some accounts say the explorer, who gained famed for expeditions in the Great Lakes areas, the Missis sippi River and for establishing a set tlement at Montreal, was looking for the mouth of the Mississippi when he sailed into Matagorda Bay with his four ships. Some say he was forced ashore in Texas by a storm. Nevertheless, his claim to the land for France eventually put Texas for the first time under jurisdiction of the U.S. Government when the French holdings were included in the famous Louisiana Purchase. Among those planning tok hand for the landing are Hm> : ; based French Consul Generali Quentin and Texas Secreffl 1 State Myra McDaniel. This week, a Texas partment crew was beach where the cermoniesJ held. FaSalle didn’t have ury. “Actually, they were prett) tic,” Hammerschmidt says. “A was coming in. They may hart 1 two of their boats. And thegu' 1 dropped them off left.” Fooking back over the 300'® FaSalle might have consider^ landing the first of unfot® things to come. His inland Texas settlement 1 St. Fouis, fell victim to India disease. On March 19, 1687 43, he was killed near Nava one of his own men. Let D< ST< Drop by 693-0
