Lawmakers to hold public session on legislation to stiffen penalties By JEFF L. BRADY Staff Writer K Anyone interested in cracking down on crime can attend an infor mation session Thursday night to | hear the proposals of two Texas law makers with similar concerns. Sen. liE. “Buster” Brown and Rep. Dan Morales are scheduled to present a legislative package that — if approved — would make convictions easier and stiffen criminal penalties ih Texas. B Topics of the proposed legislation include: child molestation, parole and jury instruction by the judge. Child molestation penalties should be made more strict and testimonies by children and family members should be made easier, says Aggie GOP President Grant Swartzwelder. “For this area (Bryan-Gollege Sta tion), it seems to be one issue that people have already expressed an in terest in,” Swartzwelder says. The proposed parole legislation requires that anyone sent to jail must serve at least one-third of the sent ence before becoming eligible for parole. In addition, people serving sentences for violent crimes will have to remain jailed for at least two thirds of their sentences before gaining parole eligibility. Another topic of the legislative crime package involves judges’ in structions to juries. Also, the new laws would allow in mates found possessing a weapon to be convicted of a 3rd degree felony. The congressmen will begin their presentation at 8 p.m. in 607 Rudder. MSC Cafeteria Now Better Than Ever. You Will Be Pleased With These Carefully Prepared and Taste Tempting Foods.
