The winner will be decided bv science fiction fans at the World Science Fiction Convention in September. Gould said he received a letter from a man who read "Rory” com plaining about the use of a four-let ter word in the storv. “This upset me, ’ Gould said. “It also amused me greatly.” He said there is no reason to avoid profanity, because it is used every day in real life. For example, he said it is used in the Corps of Cadets all the time. “Do you portray life or ignore the language completely?,” he asked. “Do you put in gosh or go for the as- tericks and* underlines, which I feel is silly?” Gould said he used the four-letter in his story because the characters were facing a life and death situa tion. "People tend to use that language in that situation,” he said. Gould said most science fiction magazine editors realize obscene words do exist and approve of their use only if they are used for shtxk or emphasis in the story. Fie also read the prologue and the first chapter of “The Class Helm,” a novel he is trying to sell. The novel examines what education does to keep civilization intact. Gould said his Hugo Award nomination may in crease his chances of selling the Steve Gould novel. "Mental Blocks,” a short sioul .it a university, will be publish the July issue of Amazing map Three of his short stories have* published by Analog and Isaii mov’s Science Fiction Magazine Gould attended Texas A&Mfc 1973-78 and 1981-84.
