Legion of Doom students accused of more felonies Associated Press FORT WORT H — Investigators have turned up at least 10 new fel ony crimes attributed to a student vigilante group known as the Legion of Doom, a police spokesman said. Spokesman Doug Clarke said Monday an arson investigator and two members of the police gang unit have been assigned to help the ser geant and two detectives already working on the case. “More felony offenses are turning up,” Clarke said Monday. “We’re looking at between 10 and 15 new offenses.” Among them, he said, are two fire bombings. Last week, police said they were investigating around 30 acts of vio lence, including a car bombing. According to police, the Legion of Doom Consists of about nine stu dents at Paschal High School, in cluding athletes and honor students. The group engaged in acts of vio lence and intimidation in an attempt to rid their campus of drugs, crime and students they considered unde sirable. Two students and a recent Paschal graduate were free on bond last week following their arrests in the investigation of a pipe bomb that ex ploded in a student’s car on March 24. Police suspect Legion members of shooting at several homes and vehi cles, of making threats against stu dents and of building illegal weap ons. Meanwhile, Paschal officials said they have dissolved an official patrol group whose ranks may have in cluded four Legion members. The student group, which was called the Ambassadors, was dis banded because of complaints about rudeness and abuse of privileges, said Melvin King Jr., Paschal vice principal. “We goofed on the Ambassadors,” he said. School administrators created the group in January primarily to patrol the campus and halls in an attempt to reduce thefts. Proposed bill would tighten happy hour drink specials Associated Press AUSTIN — Members of the House Liquor Regulation Commit tee were told Tuesday that the re cent state ruling against two-for-one drinks was only a “thin wedge” in the “happy hour” controversy. “The new rule fails to touch most happy hour promotions that cause excessive consumption of liquor,” said Rep. Gary Thompson, D-Abi lene. Thompson’s bill to place strict state controls on efforts of bar own ers to increase trade through special late afternoon or late night price re ductions and other, promotions was sent to a subcommittee. “We have to do something to curb alcohol-related accidents,” said Chris Semos, Dallas County commissioner and former state legislator. “Happy hour just encourages abuse.” William Hartsfield, representing the nine TGI Friday’s restaurants in Texas, supported Thompson’s bill. He said his stores specialize in non alcoholic drinks at discount prices. In answering questions, Hartsfield said TGI Friday’s still makes about 36 percent of its income from bever ages because non-alcoholic or low-al cohol drinks are sold for as much or more than regular drinks. Jim Gallemore, representing the Texas Mixed Beverages Association, urged no more restrictions “until we see how the new rules by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission work.” Herbert Wilson, T exas Hotel-Mo tel Association,-said his association considered Thompson’s bill unnec essary. “Happy hour is not a DWI agent,” said Richie Jackson, of the Texas Restaurant Association. He said his association disagreed with the TABC’s ruling against two-for-one drinks, hut favors a Senate bill that would allow 50 percent discounts for drinks. “We feel complimentary drinks should be allowed,” Jackson said. “This bill would not allow a diner to order a bottle of wine and take what is left home with him.” Joe Darnall, general counsel of the TABC said there had been only 12 formal warnings issued among the 25,000 retail drinking places in Texas since the Dec. 27 ruling against two-for-one sales. rWzaworksj WILD WOLL WEDNESDAY FWEE PEPPEWONIWOLLS! ■ ww on wequest only ?
