-16- At the Movies MSC Aggie Cinema and Cepheid Variable 845-1515 City Heat: Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds are finally in a filn together. A smooth-talking’private eye (Rey nolds) locks horns with a hard-nosed cop (Eastwood) while trying to bring rival gangsters to justice. Go see it and make Eastwood's day. Friday Sat urday. 7:30 6= 9:45 p.m. Rudder Theatre PG. The Road Warrior: He’s back and he’s madder than ever! (Sound fa miliar? How- about I'm mad too, Max?) The continuing adventures of Mad Max in which he helps a group of people escape from sadistic, ugly bik ers. Chase scenes and stunning stunt work are what made this movie the way it is. (For some reason, Ford Mo tor Company is sponsoring this movie. Probably something to do with the fast pace car movements or what- ever you want to refer to them-as.) Don’t forget Mel u Oh Baby” Gibson plays Mad Max. Friday & Saturday. Midnight. Rudder Theatre.R. Th e Tin Drum: A young Polish bov, Oskar, refuses to grow after the age of three. Confused and terrified bv the violence of adults, he develops a piercing scream that he uses to at tack the frightening world of the Na zis, as described by Gunter Grass. Sunday. 7:30 p.m.Unrated. Ai ice in Wonderland: And in this corner is this semester's Walt Dis ney classic offering. Alice, come on out and take a bow! (Applause) I would like to thank all you wonderful people of Texas A&M for inviting me to come visit your neato place. Hee. Hee. Oh, here’s a little, bitty white bunny. Sir, can we have a word with you? Defmitly a negative on that. I'm late, can't you tell? Wednesday. 7:30 p.m. G. Star Trek III: The crew of the starship Enterprise are in search of... Mr. Spock. Is Mr. Spock alive? Will Captain Kirk ever command the En terprise again? Will the sequels ever end? Does anyone ever read these things or do I do all this writing in vain? Find out in Star Trek III. Thurs day. 7:30 &= 9:45 p.m. Rudder Theatre. G. Plitt Cinema III 846-6714 The Breakfast Club: Five kids are stuck in detention for nine hours. Nothing can be more depressing than nine hours with five of your non-clos- est friends. Funny thing how east' it is to find friends where you least expect it. Every character wall remind you of someone you knew in high school — perhaps even yourself. Let’s see, there is a jock, a princess, a brain, a basket- case and a criminal. This is perhaps the first movie I've ever seen where kids are acting like kids. R. A Passage to India: It was a .terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day for Dr. Aziz. From the moment he instigates a picnic at the caves, to the end of his being tried for a rape charge, he has a very difficult time. This one is about the culture clashes in pre-Gandhi India (as one rather verbose Englishwoman puts it, “East is East. It’s a matter of culture.”). That might be so, but which culture is the one to live by. David Lean,(“Law rence of Arabia," “Doctor Zhivago”) directed. Good movie. PG-13. Amadeus: Some movies just refuse to die! It’s back. One of my fa vorite movies from last semster. (I chose it for best movie over Shawm’s “Killing Fields”.) Despite what. Shawm said about Wolfie being a geeky kind of guy, I really enjoved Tom “Animal House” Hulce's perfbmance as Wolf gang Motzart. The score is fantastic and the acting superb. A definite must see movie for everybody. PG. Post Oak 764-0616 Th e Killing Fields: Columnist Syd ney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) went to Cambodia in 1977 as a New' York Time’s correspondent. His assistant, Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor) w'as Cam bodian born. When all Cambodians were ordered out of the country’, Schanberg watches Pran enter what was to be known as the “killing fields, the interior Cambodia. This is a very emotional film that tells the story' of Schanberg and Pran as much as it does the story of the war. R. Visionquest: Louden is a high school wrestler. His goal in life is to beat the best wrestler in the district. Unfortunately, this other wTestler has arms bigger than the telephone pole he trains with. Not a good sign. Loud- en’s training is cruising along great w'hen he meets the girl of his dreams. When she moves into his house, he be comes obsessed with more than just wrestling. Actually, this movie is sur prisingly alright. Matthew Modine (“Birdy” and “Mrs. Soffel”) plays Louden. PG. nation “Flashdance”/“Breakin'.” Mavbe it was the break dancing in the street or the dance audition scene that surfaced in the previews. Anyway, lots of peole dance around in lots of nothing and get paid for it. (I think I'm in the wrong profession.) Here's a tidbit: Sidney Poiter directed. PG. Protocol: Just w’hen you thought it was safe to go to a movie and not see Goldie Hawn! She's back (low, foreboding music begins). Goldie stars as a spirited Washington D.C. cocktail waitress who accidently saves the life of a foriegn dignitary. As life usually goes in the movie world, the State Department offers her the job of entertaining visiting diplomats. Buck Henrv had a hand in the screen- plav. PG. Schulman Six 775-2463 W itness: A Philadelphia cop, John Book, must protect a little Amish boy w'ho is the only witness to a murder. The catch here is that the guv who was murdered was an undercover cop and the murderer is also a cop. Since Book knows the truth, he flees Phila delphia and moves in with the Amish. Completely put of place, he begins his attempt to blend into the back ground. A romance blossoms be tween Book and Rachel, the kid’s mom. But can romance span cultures so intensely different? Harrison Ford plays Book along the lines of Hans Solo. Really a neat and different movie. R. Beverly Hills Cop: How much monev' can this film make? That seems to be the only question left. Ed die Murphy stars as a Detroit cop who follows the trail of a friend’s killer to Beverly Hills. This is a comedy-thriller with tons of action and Murphy is as great as always. Only Eddie could wear the same shirt throughout Bev erly Hills and not look tacky. Par amount executives are already dis cussing a sequel. Classic Eddie Murphy. R. The Sure Thing: This is the story of two college freshmen who travel from upstate New York to Cali fornia together in a car-pool type deal. The guy, Gib, is the typical col lege freshman — always pre-occupied with junk food and sex. The girl, Al ison, is the tvpe we females love to hate — well-organized and planned out. The title comes from the date Gib travels to California for — the infa mous “sure thing.” PG. X ast Forward: Body rock hits the streets! I’m not sure but some thing tells me this movie is a combi Mischief: Supposedly, this is a better-than-usual teen flick. Kinda hard for me to believe, but you never know. The kid from “On Golden Pond” is trying to make it uhth a cer tain prom queen-type who, u’e dis cover, is not as prudish as we origi nally think. There is also a hunk (played by some 33-ycar-old guy) who is trying to show the kid the way. And there’s a sweet girl who is a prude, as well. R. Starman: All life forms in the univ'erse have been receiving an invi tation to Earth since 1977 thanks to Voyager II. In this film, directed by John Carpenter (“Halloween") some thing out there, played by Jeff Bridges, accepts the invitation, comes to Earth and clones himself human from a lock of hair. Karen Allen has the mis- fortune (or is she actually fortunate?) to be chosen to drive Bridges to the rendevous point picked by the upper- echelon of his home planet. R. ^1 iglmnare on Elm Street: Supposedly this is another rip ’em up and eat ’em for breakfast movie. I think I’ll pass. The guvs at the theater said it could be compared to “Hallo ween” or any other gucky movie along those lines. 1 wonder if a doctor will die due to an injection in his eyeball? I hope not.R. Manor East 823-8300 X alcon and the Snowman: Twe upper class California kids get them selves involved with the KGB when they begin selling CIA satellite secrets. It seems one of the kids finds out that the CIA is delving into Australian pol itics. His way of fighting back is to sell secrets to the Soviets. His buddy is a drug dealer on the run for possession of massive amounts of cocaine. Timo thy Hutton and Sean Penn star. They are the best things going for the movie. The basic plot is boring. The KGB agents aren’t believable, w'hich is a real shame since they are on the screen a whole lot. R. L<ertain Fury: Tatum O'Neil and Irene Cara star in this police- chase movie. Somehow the two end up killing a policeman but I think it was accidental. Anyhow, they have to run away from the authorities. I don’t think Irene gets to sing in this, but that's not real!}' a major loss. News flash! Shawn just informed me it was made in Canada. Will wonders never cease? R. iViissing in Action II: As ev eryone knows by now, there is a guy named Chuck Norris who makes his living kicking people in the gut while tearing up movie sets. His last movie, “Missing in Action” actually made a tidy sum of money. Because of this, a sequal has emerged w'hich, I’m sure the producers hope, will make lots of money , too. PG.
