AUSTIN — Texas border sen-
that is being created by those ini
Se
searches by the federal government
at the United States-Mexico border
had helped to wreck the economy of
that region.
Three senators sponsored a reso
lution stating the Texas Senate’s “ex
press displeasure” with the “offi
cious actions” of the U.S. Drug
Enforcement Administration in con
ducting the searches.
The resolution, which was ap
proved on voice vote, said the
searches to “halt the insidious drug
smuggling” across the border held
paralyzed traffic at 15 border cross
ings.
“This, coupled with the peso de
valuation, has completely shattered
the economy of your border cities,”
said Sen. Tati Santiesteban, D-El
Paso, a border city of 500,000.
Santiesteban said “to add insult to
injury” immigration officials were
checking only Mexican passengers.
“Allegedly, tney are searching for
the (federal drug official) victim that
was kidnapped in Guadalajara,” he
said.
“Now, I make a living, you realize,
defending people accused of crimes,
and I cannot tell you the laughter

underworld,” said Santiesteban.
Sen. Hector Uribe, D-Brownsii
said he, too, had heard thatDEAii
ministrator Francis Mullen wasi
ing to send a message to Mexicant ;
of ficers at Guadalajara, and th
message was, “We decry yourlacN
cooperation in our efforts to W
and prosecute those who have
napped agents of the DEA —
on you.”
“It’s a good message,” Uribesaii
but he added, “Senators, whatev
the message is, it’s being senttoi
wrong address. I don’t knowwhfi
being sent to border merchants ai>
shoppers and cousins on bothsid'
of the border.
“And by the way, Mr.
the DEA, Guadalajara is in
Mexico — and by the way Mr.Wjj
len, every border has two sides ’’
Sen. John Traeger, D-Seg
whose district includes the bord<
city of Laredo, said of the resolution
“It is not possible for theTexasSft
ate to censure the Drug Enfortf
merit Administration of the
States government, but by thisrf>’
lution we are going as farasweS
to censure them —to tell themlio
thoughtless, how totally
ble their actions were.”
