The committee recommends each student complete six hours of speech and writing skills, mathematical and logical reasoning, cultural heritage, and social science. The committee also recommends eight hours of sci ence. Three senators sponsored a reso lution stating the Texas Senate’s “ex press displeasure” with the “offi cious actions” of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in con ducting the searches. The resolution, which was ap proved on voice vote, said the searches to “halt the insidious drug smuggling” across the border held paralyzed traffic at 15 border cross ings. “This, coupled with the peso de valuation, has completely shattered the economy of your border cities,” said Sen. Tati Santiesteban, D-El Paso, a border city of 500,000.
