Senator Sam Black, chairman of the academic affairs committee, said the hearing, the first of three sched uled for this semester, will provide a forum for students, faculty and staff to express their support or concern for the proposal. The committee recommends each student complete six hours of speech and writing skills, mathematical and logical reasoning, cultural heritage, and social science. The committee also recommends eight hours of sci ence. Other recommendations will re quire each student entering theli] versity to have completed at one computer science course show proficiency by passing an animation. Three senators sponsored a reso lution stating the Texas Senate’s “ex press displeasure” with the “offi cious actions” of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in con ducting the searches. The resolution, which was ap proved on voice vote, said the searches to “halt the insidious drug smuggling” across the border held paralyzed traffic at 15 border cross ings. “This, coupled with the peso de valuation, has completely shattered the economy of your border cities,” said Sen. Tati Santiesteban, D-El Paso, a border city of 500,000. Santiesteban said “to add insult to injury” immigration officials were checking only Mexican passengers. “Allegedly, tney are searching for the (federal drug official) victim that was kidnapped in Guadalajara,” he said. “Now, I make a living, you realize, defending people accused of crimes, and I cannot tell you the laughter 11 K underworld,” said Santiesteban.
