Cambodian guerrillas, stubbornlyig-
not ing an order to retreat, tried to
retake the major non-communist re
bel base of Ampil after Vietnamese
troops bad overrun it.
In what military analysts calledi
serious escalation of tension along
the T hai-Cambodian border, Viet
namese gunners shot down a Thai
Air Force jet fighter, killing one of
its pilots.
Some 4.500 guerrillas loyal to
ousted Cambodian Prince Norodom
Sihanouk were lighting their wav to
ward Ampil to support rebels of the
Khmer National Peoples Liberation
Front, or KPNLF, who are tryingto
recapture their base from Vietnam
ese troops.
Thai military sources said at least
20 Cambodian rebels had been
killed and 50 wounded during the
second day of the battle for the
KPNLF base, overrun by the Viet
namese earlier T uesday.
Three reliel groups — Sihanouk's
forces, the KPNLF" and the commu
nist Khmer Rouge — are fighting
160,000 Vietnamese troops that
have occupied Cambodia for the last
six years.
Vietnam !>cgan an offensive late
last year to capture the KPNLF bases
inside Cambodia but fighting has
freuuently spilled over into Thai
land.
Eight arms and machine-gun fire
echoed across the battleground at
Ampil as Cambodian rebels em
ployed guerrilla tactics to dislodge
the 3,000 Vietnamese troops who
overran the Ampil camp in an as
sault backed by Soviet T-54 tanks.
Routed KPNLF guerrillas fled the
burning camp and, ignoring orden.
hundreds made their way to an anti
tank ditcli near Ban Sa-Ngae, 43
miles northeast of the major Thai
border town of Aranyapratnet
“The orders were to retreat and
fight another day,” a KPNLF
spokesman said. He said that after
an initial pullback, the rebels re
grouped and re-entered the camp,
determined to regain control.
