Imagine dining on a veranda overlooking the ocean, a
cool Mexican breeze blowing in your face. Taste
guacamole with just the right amounts of tomato and
lemon, and enchiladas so full of melted cheese that they
are about to explode. Feast upon tamales, spicy tacos,
rice and of course, frijoles. Now you could go to coastal
Mexico for these delicacies. Or you can come to

United Way
almost hits
total goal

T he Brazos County United Way’s
1984-85 campaign drive has raised
$418,821 and pledges are within
98.5 percent of the $425,000 goal,
of ficials said Tuesday.
“We are virtually assured of
reaching our goal,” said Celia Stal
lings, the fund-raising drive chair
man. “In fact, if the workers can
complete the calls they’ve been as
signed and (the contributors) return
no more than last year’s contribu
tions, we’ll go well over our goal.”
Though the United Way cam
paign officially ended Nov. 16, Stal
lings said volunteers need to com
plete their calls and get results to the
United Way office as quickly as pos
sible.
"With
sured
we’ve promised to the 18 human
service agencies in Brazos County,”
Stallings said.
United Way supports local agen
cies such as the Mental Health Men
tal Retardation Authority of Brazos
Valley, Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of
America and the Rape Crisis Center.
This year’s campaign has ex
ceeded last year’s pledge total of
$396,000-by more than $20,000 and
has passed the $400,000 mark for
the first time.
“We still need to finish our job in
order to meet the goal we estab
lished to fully fund the United Way
agencies in our county,” Stallings
said. “We hope it can be done within
the next few days.”
Recent pledges which greatly in
creased the total included a St. Jo
seph’s hospital employees’ pledge of
$7,322, an employees’ contribution
of $3,483 from Republic Bank
A&M, a K-Mart employees’ pledge
of $1,620 and a $1,242 gift from the
Steak and Ale restaurant.
