Texts attacked at state hearing United Press International AUS TIN — Religious fundamen talists Thursday attacked science and biology textbooks proposed for Texas classrooms as being pro-evo lution, favoring abortion and con taining sex education-related illus trations that are too graphic. “It’s not sex education, it’s more of a how to,” Clova Wood of Garland said of one of the books during a public hearing before the state Board of Education. Wood and Carolyn Galloway of Dallas were the most outspoken crit ics of the sex education portion of the proposed biology texts, which they said contained illustrations of the sex organs that are too detailed. “I think it breaks down the natu ral barrier that exists between boys and girls,” Galloway said. “I chal lenge you board members to go back to your districts and find out what’s being taught in sex education.” The newly appointed 15-member board got its first exposure to Texas’ textbook selection process at the public hearing on proposed new texts for science and biology for the next six years. The panel will consider adoption of the $55.4 million in texts for the 1985 school year when it meets Sat urday. The science and biology texts are for grades 1-5 and for college preparatory courses. Another witness, Sherry Bell of Dallas, complained that one of the biology books “sounded wrong” on the issue of abortion because it seemed to advocate abortion as a means of birth cdntrol. “The author must have 'a J pro abortion philosophy, which is strong,” she said. “I’m sure millions of people around the state would be alarmed at this.” The assault on the books was led by nationally known textbook critic Mel Gabler of Longview, a religious fundamentalist who called on the board to reject the books because they give unfair emphasis to the the ory of evolution. “There is much solid scientific evi dence against evolution, but this kind of scientific evidence is cen sored from the textbooks you are considering for adoption,” he said. “This is intellectual dishonesty.” Steven Schafersman of Houston, president of the Texas Council for Science Education, also called on the board to reject the books, but on the basis that they contained “unscien tific passages. The texts won the lukewarm en dorsement of anti-censorship leader Michael Hudson of Austin who said the books appeared to have been se lected on “educational criteria.” Hudson, Texas coordinator of People for the American Way, said the books were “not ideal,” but added it appeared the textbook com mittee, Board of Education and edu cation commissioner had not “caved in to pressure to reject books or re quire textual changes based on polit ical or religious ideology.” Now carry your books, notepads, pencils, sneakers, sweatshirt and shorts, in a new Campus Carry-All.
