"There have been times when the club was having trouble get ting through," he says. "Parti cularly with this court case, we've used a lot of money. "Plus, we have to pay for meeting rooms and things we would get free from the Univer sity if recognized. The ads in The Battalion cost us more than it does the recognized student organizations. It all adds up to several hundred dollars." Roberts says, however, that the biggest problem for the GSS right now is not funds but get ting new people to join. He says the battle for recognition has made more gays aware of the group, but has had negative ef fects as well. "A lot of people have ex pressed to me that they don't like the fact that we're doing this and that they will think of joining us once we're through fighting," he says. "And after that, recognition might hurt us with membership because peo ple might still be scared to join because of, 'Will someone know that I'm a member of this group?'. Of course that's not going to happen, but those con ceptions still exist." Attitudes such at that are something that Roberts says the GSS constantly faces. That was apparent during the demon stration last Thursday when members of SWAMP threat ened to sit on the Memorial Stu dent Center grass. Many stu dents assumed that the GSS was involved and anti-gay signs were highly visible in the crowd during the demonstration. "SWAMP has no responsibil ity to us and they don't have to ask us for approval," Roberts says. "They are an independent organization and we have no common members. "We knew some people would try to tie us to the dem onstration — we're really not surprised. Some people be lieved it because that's what they were told, some believed it because they wanted to. "I think a lot of people who are against us were happy to see us tied to a very unpopular issue. We were relatively doing better than we have been at other times, and unfortunately this incident and our being tied to it hurt us. "We stand behind SWAMP's ideals. We may not agree with their particular methods how ever. On this particular issue we had no participation." The GSS also faced added student reaction after the Stu dent Senate passed a resolution favoring its recoginition. After the resolution was passed, it was vetoed by Student Body President David Alders, be cause of what he called techni cal problems. Roberts says he was pleased with the Senate's actions, but not surprised at Alder's veto. "The Senate voted in the pub lic interest rather than the pub lic view," he says. "And I knew ahead of time that the president of the student body was against us. As a matter of fact, he called us a social club. Again, I can as sure you that he had no idea of what we're about — he has never come in contact with us. "This may not look good for the Senate now, but in the long run it will. I think Diane Baum- bach expressed that, citing that back in 1969, the student senate voted against letting women on campus. "It's not a question of major ity views, it's a question of what's right and wrong." Many students have ex pressed disagreement with that last statement, saying that the senators should have voted as their constituents wished. Rob erts says government involves more than taking polls and that the Senate acted accordingly. "When I elect someone to represent me, I would hope that they act not on my igno rance but on the facts they have, that I may not have," he says. "The majority of the stu dents don't have the facts be cause we are unable to provide them at this time. That's what we are trying to do." Roberts says the fight for rec ognition has been tough, but is something he doesn't regret. "Out of bad things, good things come," he says. "What A&M has accomplished by going up the legal ladder is that a precedent has been set. We will be helping out other stu dent groups across the state. "Maybe it wasn't worth it to the students a few years ago, and maybe the students now won't benefit either. But in the long run — and for the people that come after us — yes, it is worth it."
