Both Hill and his opponent have impressive law enforcement credentials. But Hill’s clear understanding of the importance of the administrative aspects of the job, along with his specific plans for the department if elected, suggest that he would be the more effective sheriff for Brazos Coiinty. Hill has done his homework - he understands the importance of strong visible leadership, the difficulties which will accompany the opening of the new jail, and the need to upgrade the public’s image of the department. Howard Hill will bring to the sheriff s office a new emphasis on continuing education and a renewed sense of professionalism. Lucas says he killed 54 in N.Y., 12 in Canada United Press International BUFFALO, N.Y. — State police investigators and Erie County pros ecutors are trying to find evidence to link confessed serial murderer Henry Lucas to more than 50 un solved murders in the state, the Buf falo News reported Sunday. The News said Lucas, who is im plicated in an estimated 185 mur ders, has given information to au thorities on 35 murders in New York City, 19 others throughout the state and 12 more in Canada. The News reported that Lucas made some remarks to a Texas Ranger several months ago about some murders in western New York. The comments led to an interview Oct. 18-19 by Erie County District Attorney Richard Arcara and Capt. Edward Cass, commander of the state police Bureau of Criminal In vestigation in Batavia. The 47-year-old convicted killer, who says he has become a born- again Christian, gave the investiga tors details on homicides in New York and said he now wants to help the families of murder victims find the victims’ bodies, The News re ported. Arcara told the News that the un solved homicides under investiga tion occurred from 1975 to 1983 when Lucas, a drifter and petty thief who did odd jobs, is believed to have criss-crossed the state. Lucas said he used virtually every method except poisoning to murder, and that his soft-spoken nature helped him fool many of his victims into trusting him, one lawman who interviewed Lucas told the newspa per. “I cannot mention any specific cases because I don’t want to raise any false hopes among the families of the murder victims involved,” Ar cara said. ‘‘But at some point I plan to give a full public account of what went on down there.” One investigator, said it is possible Lucas’ claim is “pure braggadocio,” but lawmen believe Lucas could be involved in some cases in the state. Lucas told the investigators he be gan his career as a serial killer con centrating on female victims, partic ularly prostitutes. But after he began traveling with another drifter, Otis Toole, in Florida about nine years ago he began slaying men as well. The News reported that Toole also may be questioned about the New York slayings when he recovers from hepatitis in a Florida medical center. There is a three-month waiting list for police agencies wishing to in terview Lucas about open murder Machinists strike at Fort Worth plant Photo by DEANSAIK United Press International FORT WORTH — Machinists overwhelmingly agreed to walk off the job at General Dynamics mid night Sunday, but two other unions whose contracts expired at the same time are continuing negotiations. Members of the International As sociation of Machinists and Aero space Workers Local 776 Sunday voted 4,936 to 108 to strike after re jecting the company’s latest contract offer. “Pickets go up at midnight,” said an unidentified union official who predicted production at the defense plant would go “down to zero. The skilled people will be out.” However, company spokesman Joe Thornton said the plant will re main open and that work will con tinue. “And we are also disappointed that apparently there will be a strike,” he said. The machinists union represents 6,400 of General Dynamics’ 16,500 workers. General Dynamics has asked for federal mediation in talks with ma chinists. A union spokesman said media tors were called after Sunday af ternoon’s vote but that no response had been received. “We are available to meet,” he said. The machinists union broke off negotiations with the company Thursday, calling the defense con- trator’s offer “very substandard.” The union vote was 4,977 to 93 against the package. “We are ready to return to the bargaining table at any time,” Thornton said Sunday. The Office and Professional Em ployees International and the Inter national Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have not given the required 30-day notice to terminate their con tracts and are expected to report to work and continue negotiations, a spokesman at General Dynamics’ strike headquarters said. We strongly support President Reagan, Phil Gramm, as well as other Republican candidates; however some of us feel support of a candidate should not be based on party affiliation alone. It is for this reason that we looked at the individual candidates and their qualifications and have chosen to support Neeley Lewis for State Representative. Often times voters are tempted to cast their ballots strictly on party affiliation. This does not always elect the best candidate. If students want the best representation possible in the Texas Legislature, they should cast their vote for Neeley Lewis on November 6th. Common sense dictates that a tight-fisted Texas CONSERVATIVE Democrat like Neeley Lewis will best serve this district. Neeley Lewis has worked with Aggies, Republican and Democrat alike, and has effectively fought for us in the Texas House. He therefore deserves the support of Republicans as well as Democrats. We urge you to support Neeley Lewis on November 6th.
