Page 20/The Battalion/Thursday, November 1, 1984 Indicators up; trade performance, factory orders down United Press International WASHINGTON — The sensitive index of leading economic indicators gained 0.4 percent in September, its first increase in four months and a sign the economic expansion will continue, the government said Wednesday. The index would have been up a little more had some new informa tion on factory orders published Wednesday been available earlier. But the Commerce Department revised down August’s indicatofs. So instead of being up 0.5 percent they were down 0.1 percent, marking the first time since late 1981 for three consecutive monthly declines. “The September pickup in the leading index should ease concerns that the economic expansion is com ing to an end,” Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige said. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said the indicators “show the economy is maintaining its strength and heading in the right di rection.” Neither Baldrige nor the White House commented on two other, less favorable reports out Wednesday, showing the nation’s trade perfor mance continues to deteriorate and factory orders dropping ,1.8 percent. The merchandise trade deficit for September was the second highest on record, $12.6 billion — $2.8 bil lion higher than August. By year’s end, the red ink is expected to reach $130 billion — nearly twice last year’s record. Trade in heavy machinery and other items in an important cat egory, which generated big trade surpluses earlier in the 1980s, were in the red for the second month. Although Americans spent more on a wide variety of imported goods, they spent 5.4 percent less on im ported oil in September with the price per barrel slipping 41 cents to $28.70. Members of the OPEC oil cartel Wednesday announced agreement on an emergency 9 percent cut in production to prop up the price and head off a global price war. Six of the 11 leading indicators that were available for September contributed to the increase, led by the formation of new businesses. Of the five negative indicators, new orders for factory goods was the worst. The composite index, designed to look ahead to where the economy will be in the coming weeks and months, is down 2.3 percent in four months, more than the decline that served as a forewarning of the 1981- 1982 recession. However, in 1966 during il Vietnam War, the index droppt for nine consecutive months withot a recession, only a slowdown. Besides the rate of new busim formation, the positive indicators!! September were a slowing in tl pace of deliveries, a likely signi greater demand; an expansiom the money supply; an expansion outstanding credit; a longer avenji workweek, and an increase in prices.
