The two teams meet to determine, among other things, which of them has any witch craft left over from their magical wins of a week ago. Dallas is a 10-point favorite, al though the Cowboys have beaten only one team by that many points all year. “Every game we play is a tough game,” said Dallas Coach Tom Landry, whose team managed to complete the first half season tied for the NFC East lead. “It doesn’t make any difference who we play. We are not scoring touchdowns and therefore we are in a battle every week. “Indianapolis runs the ball very tough and we haven’t stopped the run for three weeks,” Landry said. The Cowboys inability to stop the run helped the New Orleans Saints roll to a 21-point advantage going into the fourth quarter last Sunday night. Somehow, Dallas rallied to tie the game and eventually win it in overtime. The Colts had to come from al most as far down as Dallas did last weekend to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers. But they did so in a much more spectacular fashion. Pittsburgh was in front by 16 points entering the last quarter, but the Colts stormed back with the win ning touchdown. It came on a de flected pass that Ray Butler picked off and carried in for a touchdown with 34 seconds to play. Dallas enters the game tied with Washington and St. Louis at 5-3 for first place. Indianapolis is 3-5 and in need of a string of victories if it hopes to have a chance at the play offs in the Colts first year in their new home. The game also marks the first start of the year for White, who was deposed as the Cowboys starting quarterback at the beginning of the season. General ineffectivness by Gary Hogeboom, plus a bang on the wrist Hogeboom suffered during the Cowboys’ comeback win over New Orleans, combined to give White a chance this week. White helped lead the three- touchdown rally against the Saints, although much of the work was done by the Cowboys’ defense and special teams. “We have to use the quarterback we are comfortable with,” Landry said. “Danny was part of a good thing the other night (against the Saints) and I hope it carries over. “I’ve tried to explain it all year that we have to use our two quar terbacks if we are going to win this season.” Battalion Scientific Football Picks Peter Rocha Sports Photographer \ ■' Ed Cassavoy Sports Editor Reveille Travis Tingle Assistant Sports Editor —x, dp. / !J» / / Tony Cornett Sports Writer Rice at Texas A&M A&M by 3 A&M by elimination Ags by 4 A&M by 9 In sunshine A&M by 84 A&M by 7 Arkansas at Houston Houston by 6 Arkansas by 2 Coogs by 102 Arkansas by 1 Arkansas by 3 Houston by J Baylor aUCU TCU by 14 TCU by 10 Frogs by 1 TCU by 4 TCU by 7 TCU by 7 SMU at Texas Texas by 10 Texas by 3 Hornsby 3 Texas by 14 SMU by 1 Texas by 10 Tulsa at Texas Tech Texas Tech by 7 Texas Tech by 7 Raiders by a Tom Wilson Tulsa by 7 Texas Tech by 7 Texas Tech by 3 Georgia at Kentucky Georgia by 21 Georgia by 14 Kentucky by a nose Georgia by 13 Georgia by 7 Georgia by 14 llllnol* at Michigan Illinois by 7 Michigan by 3 llllnl by 3 7 Illinois by 10 Michigan by 3 Michigan by 9 Notre Dame at LSU LSU by 21 LSU by 6 Bayou Bengals by 3 LSU by 6 LSU by 10 LSU by 5 Ohio State at Wisconsin Ohio Slate by 17 Ohio Slate by 7 Buckeyes by 6 Ohio Stale by 6 Ohio Stale by 7 Ohio Stale by 10 Mississippi at Vanderbilt Mississippi by 7 Mississippi by 1 Vandy by 1 Mississippi by 16 Vanderbilt by 1 Mississippi by 7 Indianapolis at Dallas Cowboys by “11" again Cowboys by 1 Pokes by a White Cowboys by 7 Cowboys by 7 Cowboys by 14 Cincinnati at Houston Bengals by showing up or 3 Oilers by 6 Bengols by a bunch Oilers by a missed Bengal FG Oilers by 3 Oilers by 7 Eighth Week Totals Overall: 66-30; Pet. — .688 Overall: 64-32; Pet. — .666 Overall: 63-33; Pet. — .656 Overall: 62-34; Pet. — .645 Overall: 60-36; Pci. — .625 Overall: 59-37; Pet. — .614 Oilers pray for win against Bengals United Press International HOUSTON — There’s optimism in the Oiler camp. Just three weeks ago the Oilers lost 13-3 to the Cincinnati Bengals. The 0-8 Oilers will host the 2-6 Bengals Sunday to start the second half of the NFL season. In between, the Oilers have shown marked improvement against two of the best teams in the league. The big hope in players, coaches and fans is that this week will see the Oilers win. Even the public relations office is throwing caution to the wind in its releases. “All systems are ‘GO’ for the sec ond half of the NFL season for the Houston Oilers,” the latest release says. “The Oilers have dropped back-to-back games to the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers the past two weeks but in so doing proved to themselves that they can play with anyone in the NFL.” One of the improvements has been in quarterback Warren Moon, in his first NFL season after leading the Edmonton Eskimos to five Ca nadian Football League champion ships. “He’s hit 72 percent of his passes in the last two games — that’s higher than anybody in the league,” Coach Hugh Campbell said Thursday. Campbell admitted that there has been some pressure from manage ment because of the Oilers’ dismal record. “It’s tough, but on the other hand I’d rather be coaching a team like this that’s young and getting better every week, than a team that’s 4-4 and should be better,” he said. Campbell said coaches and play ers see a light at the end of the tun nel and when they reach it, they will enjoy it more because of the struggle it took to get there.
