Washington became the Fifth team to be ranked No. 1 this year by the UPI Board of Coaches, moving up from third after Texas and Oklahoma played to a 15-15 tie Saturday. “It doesn’t do any good at this time of the year,” James said of f being No. 1. “It’s only good after January 2.” This is the second time Wash ington has been No. 1. The Huskies were top-ranked for four weeks in 1982 until being upset 43-31 by Stanford in the eighth week of the season. This week it was a 37-15 vic tory over Stanford that moved the Huskies to the top. “The 1982 club did it on what they did in the 1981 Rose Bowl,” ames said. “This team has done it on their own.” But James is hardly excited over being No. 1. “It really doesn’t matter to us,” esaid. “We really don’t care.” The Huskies received 24 of 41 I Irsl-place votes and 570 total points after improving to 6-0. Oklahoma held second with 3 h first-place votes and 537 Va oints while Texas slipped from irst to third with 9 ‘/a first-place rotes and 530 ‘/a points. One loach split his first-place vote be- ween Texas and Oklahoma. No. 4 Boston College (two trst-place votes and 488 points), to. 5 Brigham Young (one first- ilace vote and 435 points), No. 6 Nebraska (389 points) and No. 7 louthern Methodist (344 points) 11 held their ranking from last veek. Ohio State picked up the mal first-place vote and 291 joints for eighth. Total points are based on 15 for First place, 14 for second, etc. No. 9 Louisiana State and No. 10 Miami round out the top 10, followed by No. 11 South Caro lina, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 13 Auburn, No. 14 Georgia, No. 15 Kentucky, No. 16 Florida State, No. 17 Iowa, No. 18 Flor ida, No. 19 West Virginia and No. 20 Michigan. Auburn, Miami, Nebraska and Texas were previously ranked No. 1 this year. Kentucky made the biggest jump this week, moving up Five spots after improving to 5-0 with a 17-13 victory over Mississippi State. South Carolina and Au burn jumped three spots after the Gamecocks knocked off Pitts burgh 45-21 and Auburn pulled out a 42-41 thriller over Florida State. Florida State tumbled eight places after the loss. West Virginia and Michigan made their way back into the Top 20. West Virginia’s 20-10 victory over Syracuse brought the Moun taineers back after a two-week ab sence. Michigan blasted North western 31-0 after dropping out of the ratings last week for the First time all year. Penn State and Purdue fell from the ratings. The Nittany Li ons, ranked No. 12 last week, were upset 6-0 by Alabama and are unranked for the First time this season. Purdue dro from No. 17 after being mered 40-3 by Iowa. In games matching ranked teams this week, Boston College visits West Virginia, Louisiana State hosts Kentucky and Iowa hosts Michigan. Landry said that, despite two con- cutive poor showings, Hogeboom mid start again Sunday night ainstthe New Orleans Saints. Landry, however, has other prob- . lens to worry about. Jim Cooper, an eight-year veteran [tensive tackle who has consistently len the team’s top lineman, broke an ankle at a Dallas nightclub Mon day night while enjoying an evening „ o^i with his wife. r»‘That is a big blow to us,” Landry |d. “The offensive line was the pee we were hurting so bad al- ady.” SCooper’s injury leaves the team I ^thjust two tackles — Phil Pozderac Bid Howard Richards. guess they will just pick out wtiich side they want to play on and do it,” Landry said. “These things i don’t happen to us very often. I don’t remember the last time we had i an off-the-field injury like that, al though I remember when (former offensive lineman) Ralph Neely wrecked his motorcycle and was out for a year.” Hogeboom, named starting quar terback over Danny White before the opening game of the season, was replaced by White during Dallas’ last two games — losses to St. Louis and Washington. Landry said he saw no reason to change starters. “We are not going to do things any differently at this point,” Landry said. “I’m going to go with Gary this week. He is doing very well for a First-year quarterback. “He made a couple of mistakes in the game against Washington, yet he threw the ball very well in several sit uations when there wasn’t much there. He’s learning. He’s going to make some mistakes along the way.” Before the Washington game, Landry said he would make a change when necessary anywhere in the lineup. He said winning was the bottom line and that was going to be a struggle for the Cowboys this year. Landry was asked Tuesday whether that meant the Cowboys had just as good a chance to win games with Hogeboom starting as with White. “I think at this point, yes,” he said. “You have to measure the future in what you are trying to do along with the immediacy of what’s happening. I’m not hesitant to put Danny in there. He will do a good job anytime you put him in the ball game. But at this point it’s better to go the way we are going. “I could bring Danny in (during a game). It’s just based upon what’s taking place at the time. But just be cause I brought Danny in doesn’t mean Gary is not going to be an im portant part in our future. He will be a good quarterback. He has a good future. He has a good arm. He just needs time to develop. “If I start using quarterbacks dif ferently than I am right now, it doesn’t mean that I don’t feel very strongly about Gary’s future.” IN 1960, THE PILL GAVE WOMEN A NEW FREEDOM.
